Three days Ouarzazate to Merzouga via the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge and Erg Chebbi dunes.
This 3-day Ouarzazate-to-Merzouga itinerary is the deep-south kasbah-and-desert route — the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge and the Erg Chebbi dunes. It is the southern leg of the classic Sahara journey, ideal for travellers starting in Ouarzazate (reached from Marrakech via Aït Ben Haddou) who want to focus on the kasbahs, the gorges and the desert.
Leave Ouarzazate and drive east through the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" to the Dades Valley, with its kasbah-dotted gorge and the famous switchback road. A walk along the gorge and a kasbah guesthouse overnight, the red walls glowing at sunset.
A morning stop at the dramatic Todra Gorge — 300-metre near-vertical canyon walls — then the drive east to Merzouga, where the Erg Chebbi dunes rise on the horizon. Swap the vehicle for a camel and trek into the dunes for sunset, arriving at a desert camp for a Berber dinner, music around the fire and a night under the stars.
Watch sunrise over the dunes (the best light of the day), then choose a 4x4 excursion to nomad families and the Khamlia Gnawa village, sandboarding on the big dunes, a guided hike to a remote corner of the erg, or simply resting at camp. The tour ends in Merzouga — continue to Fez, or return west.
We run this as a 3-day private tour from Ouarzazate to Merzouga, with all transport, kasbah and camp accommodation, a driver-guide and most meals included. Tell us your dates via the plan-my-trip form.
A private 3-day version runs approximately $400–700 per person (private driver-guide, kasbah and desert camp accommodation, gorge walks, most meals). A luxury camp raises the total. International flights are not included.
About 370 km, a 6–7 hour drive via the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. A 3-day itinerary lets you break the journey with kasbah and gorge stops and a desert camp overnight, rather than a long single drive.
A mid-range private 3-day trip runs roughly $400–700 per person including private driver-guide, kasbah and desert camp accommodation, gorge walks and most meals. Luxury camps raise the total. Flights are extra.
Ouarzazate → Dades Valley & "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" (night 1) → Todra Gorge & camel trek into Erg Chebbi (night 2, desert camp) → sunrise & full desert day (day 3). The kasbahs, the gorge and the dunes.
