Northern Morocco rewards travellers willing to venture beyond Marrakech. Chefchaouen, Tangier, and the Rif Mountains form a circuit rich in culture, history, and scenery.
Northern Morocco is one of the country's most scenically varied regions: Mediterranean coast and Spanish enclaves at the north, the dramatic Rif Mountains cutting inland, Chefchaouen's blue medina tucked into a mountain bowl, and Tetouan's whitewashed UNESCO-listed medina reflecting its Andalusian heritage. It is distinctly different in character from the imperial cities and the Sahara south, and well worth a dedicated trip.
The blue medina — painted in every shade of blue and indigo — rewards slow exploration. The key experiences: an early-morning wander before 8am while the lanes are empty and the light is golden; the climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint overlooking the full town; the Kasbah Museum covering local history; and a rooftop dinner watching the sky darken over the Rif ridgelines. Allow a minimum of two nights to do it justice.
Tangier is the natural gateway to northern Morocco from Europe — ferries from Tarifa (35 minutes) and Algeciras (90 minutes) connect directly to the port, and the new Tangier-Med port serves longer Mediterranean routes. The city itself has undergone significant transformation and rewards a half-day of exploration: the kasbah overlooking the strait, the American Legation Museum, the Café Hafa with its famous terrace view toward Spain, and the Corniche coastal walk.
Tetouan sits 60km east of Tangier and contains one of Morocco's best-preserved medinas — UNESCO-listed, largely unrestored, and significantly less visited than Fes or Marrakech. Its Andalusian heritage is tangible in the white-painted architecture, the tiled courtyards, and the specific craft traditions of leather and ceramics that differ from those found further south.
The Rif range rises dramatically between the Mediterranean coast and the inland plains, offering excellent walking through cedar forests, limestone gorges, and Berber villages. The Talassemtane National Park near Chefchaouen protects remarkable forest scenery; guided day hikes from town reach the park in 45 minutes. The three-day Chefchaouen to Akchour trekking circuit through the Rif is one of Morocco's most underrated multi-day routes.
Day 1: Arrive Chefchaouen (from Fes or Tangier). Afternoon medina walk, sunset from the Spanish Mosque. Day 2: Full day exploring — early morning photography walk, Kasbah Museum, market, afternoon cooking class or guided food tour. Evening: rooftop dinner with mountain views. Day 3: Morning guided Rif Mountains day hike (Talassemtane National Park, 5 hours), afternoon return to Chefchaouen, depart.
Days 1–2: Tangier (half-day kasbah, full day Tetouan). Day 3: Transfer to Chefchaouen (1.5 hours), evening medina walk. Day 4: Full Chefchaouen day — photography, Rif villages, market. Day 5: Morning Akchour Waterfalls hike (half-day), afternoon departure. This circuit is best done Tangier to Chefchaouen, then onward to Fes by bus or taxi.
Days 1–2: Tangier (kasbah, Tetouan day trip, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules). Day 3: Chefchaouen arrival, evening medina. Day 4: Chefchaouen full day and blue lanes photography. Day 5: Guided Rif Mountains trek — Talassemtane circuit (6 hours). Day 6: Transfer to Fes via taxi (3.5 hours), afternoon medina walk. Day 7: Full Fes day (tanneries, madrasas, souvenir shopping), evening transfer or overnight. This loop is best concluded with a Fes to Marrakech train or bus for a complete Morocco north-to-south experience.
The easiest route is by CTM or Supratours bus via Casablanca and Fes, or a combination of train and bus. The total journey is 7–9 hours. Flying to Tangier and driving or taking a taxi south is the fastest option for those with limited time.
Yes — northern Morocco including Chefchaouen, Tetouan and Tangier is generally safe for independent travellers. The main hassle in Tangier and Tetouan is persistent unofficial guides near transport hubs; a confident, purposeful manner resolves this quickly.
Easily — Chefchaouen and Fes are 4 hours apart by road, making them natural partners on a northern Morocco loop. Many travellers do Fes for 2 nights and Chefchaouen for 2 nights as a 5-day northern Morocco circuit.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal. The Rif Mountains are green and cool, the blue medina of Chefchaouen looks its most photogenic, and tourist crowds are manageable. Summer is busy but comfortable at altitude; winter brings occasional rain and cold nights.
