Mount Toubkal Complete Guide: Trekking, Difficulty & Itineraries

Hassan Ait Baha · 17 min · Trekking

Everything you need to summit North Africa’s highest peak — routes, difficulty, fitness, day-by-day itineraries, packing, costs, altitude safety and timing.

Rising to 4,167 metres, Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and the crowning trek of the High Atlas. Yet for all its stature, it is remarkably accessible: a fit, determined hiker with no prior mountaineering experience can stand on the roof of Morocco within a couple of days of leaving Marrakech. That combination of grandeur and attainability is why Toubkal draws thousands of trekkers each year.

This complete guide covers the routes, how hard it really is, the fitness you need, a day-by-day itinerary, where you sleep, what to pack, what it costs, how to handle the altitude, and the best time to go — everything you need to plan a safe, successful climb.

The rocky summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, in the High Atlas of Morocco

Toubkal Overview and Significance

Toubkal sits within Toubkal National Park, a protected area of dramatic peaks, glacial valleys and Berber villages. The trek begins in Imlil, a village at around 1,740 metres that serves as the gateway and hub for guides, mules and supplies. From here the trail climbs through walnut groves and shrines to the high mountain refuges and, ultimately, the summit ridge.

Trekking Routes

The standard route ascends from Imlil via the village of Aroumd and the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch to the Toubkal refuges at around 3,200 metres, then summits via the South Cirque — the most popular and least technical line. A more challenging North Cirque exists for experienced trekkers, and longer circuits link Toubkal with neighbouring peaks and valleys.

Difficulty and Fitness

Toubkal is graded as a strenuous trek rather than a climb. The trail is a well-trodden path with no ropes or technical scrambling in summer, but it is long, steep and high. You should be comfortable walking six to eight hours a day on rough ground and be prepared for the effects of altitude. Regular hill walking, stair climbing and cardio in the weeks before your trip will pay dividends on summit day.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Two-Day Classic

Day one: drive Marrakech to Imlil, then trek four to five hours up to the refuge at 3,200 metres for an early dinner and rest. Day two: a pre-dawn start for the three-to-four-hour summit push, sunrise from the top, then the full descent back to Imlil and Marrakech.

Three-Day Version

Adding a day allows a night in Imlil or a side valley to acclimatise, a more relaxed ascent to the refuge, and a less punishing summit day — recommended if you have any concern about altitude or fitness.

Accommodation

The two mountain refuges near the base of the summit route offer dormitory bunks, blankets, communal meals and basic bathrooms — simple but warm and social. In Imlil, guesthouses and gites provide comfortable rooms, hot showers and hearty Berber dinners before and after the trek.

What to Pack

Cost Breakdown

A guided two-day Toubkal trek typically includes a licensed mountain guide, mule support for luggage, refuge accommodation and meals, and transfers to and from Marrakech. Costs vary with group size and comfort level, but guided trips represent excellent value given the safety, logistics and local knowledge they provide. Budget extra for tips, personal gear hire and any winter equipment.

Best Time to Trek

The main season runs April to October, when the route is largely snow-free and accessible to hikers. July and August are warmest but can be hazy and busy. Spring and autumn offer clearer air and comfortable temperatures. From November to March, Toubkal becomes a genuine winter mountaineering objective requiring crampons, an ice axe and experience or a qualified winter guide.

Altitude and Safety

At over 4,000 metres, altitude is the main risk. Ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and descend if you develop worsening headache, nausea or breathlessness. Go with a licensed guide who can monitor the group and respond to problems, and never push a sick trekker toward the summit. Mountain weather changes fast, so always carry warm and waterproof layers.

Photography Tips and Viewpoints

The summit at sunrise, with the shadow of the peak cast across the ranges and the Sahara haze in the distance, is the classic shot. The refuge basin, the shrine at Sidi Chamharouch and the terraced fields above Imlil all reward the camera. Shoot early and late for the best light, and protect your gear from cold and dust.
