Mount Toubkal Trekking: Complete Guide to 2-Day, 3-Day & 4-Day Routes

Everything for climbing Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak — every route option, fitness and gear needs, refuges, guides and real costs.

Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) is the highest peak in North Africa and the most popular serious trek in Morocco. It is a genuine mountain — big enough to demand respect, high enough to cause altitude issues, and in winter serious enough to require mountaineering skills. Yet in summer it is achievable for any reasonably fit, determined hiker with a guide. This guide covers every route option, the preparation you need, and the decisions that determine whether you summit safely.

The Mountain at a Gl

Toubkal sits in the Toubkal National Park, roughly 90 minutes' drive south of Marrakech. The standard ascent starts from Imlil (1,740 m), climbs to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m, and summits the next morning before a long descent back to Imlil. The total elevation gain to the summit is around 2,400 m — comparable to many European 4,000 m peaks.

The 2-Day Toubkal Trek (Classic Route)

The most popular option. Day one: Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge via the Sidi Chamharouch shrine, a 4-5 hour climb with one steep section near the refuge. Day two: a pre-dawn start for the 2-3 hour summit push along the south cirque, a short scramble near the top, summit photos, then a full descent back to Imlil (5-6 hours). It is intense but efficient — ideal for travellers short on time who are confident in their fitness.

The 3-Day Toubkal Trek (via Azzaden)

The quieter, more acclimatised option. Day one: Imlil over the Tizi Mzik pass (2,489 m) and down into the Azzaden Valley to the Lepiney Refuge. Day two: cross to the Toubkal Refuge via the Tizi Ouanoums pass (3,684 m) — a long, scenic day that builds acclimatisation. Day three: summit and descend to Imlil. You see far more of the range, meet fewer crowds, and the gradual altitude gain reduces summit-day risk. This is the route we recommend for most first-timers.

The 4-Day Toubkal Circuit

For trekkers who want the full experience without rushing. It adds an acclimatisation day-hike around Imlil or the Azzaden Valley before the ascent, and splits the summit and descent across two days. The extra day makes the altitude gain gentler and gives buffer for bad weather — the safest option and the most enjoyable.

Fitness & Preparation

You should be able to walk 6-8 hours uphill carrying a daypack, and be comfortable on loose scree. Train with loaded hill or stair climbs for 4-6 weeks before, building to a 4-hour uphill session without excessive fatigue. No technical climbing skills are needed in summer, but basic scrambling confidence helps on the summit block.

What to Pack

Guides, Refuges & Costs

A licensed guide is required in the national park and non-negotiable for safety. A standard 2-day package ($180-260 per person) includes the guide, mule and muleteer for your bags, refuge dorm bed, and all meals. The 3-day Azzaden route runs $260-360 per person. Book refuges well ahead for spring and autumn weekends — they fill up.

Best Time to Climb

May to October is the snow-free window and the safest time for non-mountaineers. June and September offer the best balance of stable weather and comfortable temperatures. November to April is a mountaineering route requiring crampons, ice axe and experience — only attempt it with a qualified winter guide.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Mount Toubkal trek?

The standard summer route is strenuous but non-technical — a 1,000 m ascent to the refuge on day one, then a pre-dawn 900 m summit push. You need solid fitness (6-8 hours uphill with a daypack) but no climbing skills. Winter changes this entirely, requiring crampons and ice axe.

Can a beginner climb Toubkal?

A fit beginner with hill-walking experience can manage the 2-day route in summer. If you are unsure about fitness or altitude, the 3-day version adds an acclimatisation day and is the safer choice. Always go with a licensed guide.

Do I need crampons for Toubkal?

From roughly November to April, yes — snow and ice cover the upper slopes and summit ridge, making it a mountaineering route requiring crampons, an ice axe and experience. Most operators switch to summer-only ascents from May to October.

Where do you sleep on the Toubkal trek?

Most routes use the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner) at 3,207 m, a mountain hut with dorm beds, meals and basic facilities. The Azzaden route uses the Lepiney Refuge. Both must be booked in advance through your guide in high season.

What is the success rate for summiting Toubkal?

In good summer weather with a reasonable pace, the vast majority of fit trekkers summit. The main reasons for not summiting are altitude symptoms, poor weather on summit morning, and inadequate fitness — all manageable with the right preparation and a 3-day itinerary.
