Mount Toubkal 3-Day Trek: Complete Itinerary, Difficulty & Preparation

Hassan Ait Baha · 16 min · Trekking

The 3-day Toubkal trek via Azzaden explained — a quieter, better-acclimatised ascent with a full itinerary, difficulty, packing and costs.

The 3-day Mount Toubkal trek is the smarter way to climb North Africa's highest peak. By approaching via the Azzaden Valley instead of the direct Imlil route, you gain altitude gradually, see far more of the range, avoid the worst of the crowds, and arrive at the summit better acclimatised. For most first-timers and anyone unsure about their fitness, it is the route we recommend over the 2-day version. This guide covers the full itinerary, the difficulty, and what to expect.

The Azzaden Valley approach to Toubkal — quieter and more scenic than the direct route

Day One: Imlil over Tizi Mzik to the Lepiney Refuge

From Imlil (1,740 m) you climb to the Tizi Mzik pass (2,489 m) and descend into the Azzaden Valley, reaching the Lepiney Refuge in 5-6 hours. It is a varied, scenic day through Berber villages and high pastures, with a manageable altitude gain. The refuge is smaller and quieter than the Toubkal Refuge — a peaceful first night.

Day Two: Across the Tizi Ouanoums to the Toubkal Refuge

The big day. You climb to the Tizi Ouanoums pass at 3,684 m — the high point before the summit — then descend to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m. It is a long 6-7 hour day but the gradual gain builds acclimatisation, and the pass views across the Atlas are spectacular. You sleep at the Toubkal Refuge, ready for the summit push.

Day Three: Summit and Descent to Imlil

A pre-dawn start for the 2-3 hour summit climb up the south cirque, a short scramble near the top, and the 4,167 m summit. Then a long 5-6 hour descent back to Imlil. Because you are better acclimatised after two nights at altitude, the summit morning feels noticeably easier than on the 2-day route.

Why the 3-Day Route Is Better for Most

Difficulty & Fitness

Moderate-to-strenuous. Day two is long (6-7 hours with a high pass) and the summit morning is still tough, but the overall effort is more sustainable than the 2-day route. You need moderate-to-good fitness — comfortable with 6-hour hill days — but not the peak fitness the 2-day version demands.

What to Pack

The same kit as the 2-day trek: broken-in boots, layered clothing, warm hat and gloves, headtorch, sun protection, trekking poles, a sleeping bag liner, and a daypack. Your main bag travels on the mule for all three days.

Cost

A guided 3-day package runs $260-360 per person including the licensed guide, mule and muleteer, two refuge nights, and all meals. It costs more than the 2-day route but the better acclimatisation and quieter experience are worth it for most trekkers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 3-day Toubkal trek easier than the 2-day?

Yes — the daily effort is lower and the gradual altitude gain improves acclimatisation, reducing summit-day risk. The total distance is greater, but you carry only a daypack and the pace is gentler. It is the route we recommend for most first-timers.

What route does the 3-day Toubkal trek take?

The Azzaden route: Imlil over the Tizi Mzik pass to the Lepiney Refuge, then across the Tizi Ouanoums pass (3,684 m) to the Toubkal Refuge, then summit and descend to Imlil. It is quieter and more scenic than the standard 2-day route.

Where do you sleep on the 3-day Toubkal trek?

Two mountain refuges: the Lepiney Refuge in the Azzaden Valley on night one, and the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m on night two. Both have dorm beds and meals. Your guide books them in advance.

What does the 3-day Toubkal trek cost?

A guided package runs $260-360 per person including licensed guide, mule for bags, two refuge nights, and all meals. It costs more than the 2-day route but delivers a better, safer experience for most trekkers.

Do I still need to be fit for the 3-day route?

Yes — you still climb to 4,167 m. But the load is spread across three days, so moderate-to-good fitness is enough rather than the strong fitness the 2-day route demands. Train with hill walks for a few weeks beforehand.
