Everything for the 2-day Toubkal summit trek — a full itinerary, how hard it really is, what to pack, the refuge, guides and what it costs.
The 2-day Mount Toubkal trek is the most popular serious trek in Morocco, and for good reason — it delivers a 4,167 m summit, North Africa's highest, in a single weekend from Marrakech. It is intense and tiring, but achievable for any fit, determined hiker with a guide. This guide walks through the full itinerary, the honest difficulty, what to pack, and what it costs, so you arrive prepared.
You start from Imlil (1,740 m), a 90-minute drive from Marrakech. The trail climbs steadily through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Sidi Chamharouch shrine — a popular lunch stop around the halfway point. From there the path steepens up a scree slope to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m, arriving in 4-5 hours. The mule carries your main bag; you walk with a daypack. Dinner and an early night at the refuge, with a pre-dawn alarm set.
A 5 am start in the cold and dark, headtorches on. The trail climbs the south cirque on loose scree for 2-3 hours to the summit ridge, with a short, slightly exposed scramble near the top. On a clear morning the summit rewards you with views across the Atlas to the Sahara. After photos, it is a long 5-6 hour descent all the way back to Imlil — tough on the knees, so use trekking poles.
Strenuous but non-technical in summer. Day one is a steady 1,000 m ascent — tiring but paced. The summit morning is the crux: cold, dark, steep scree, and altitude above 3,800 m that can cause breathlessness and mild altitude symptoms. The descent is long and hard on the legs. You need genuine fitness, not just enthusiasm.
Train for 4-6 weeks before: weekly loaded hill or stair climbs building to a 4-hour uphill session, plus regular cardio. You should be able to walk uphill for 6 hours carrying a daypack without excessive fatigue. If you cannot, choose the 3-day route instead — it adds acclimatisation and splits the effort.
A licensed guide is required in the national park. A standard package ($180-260 per person) includes the guide, a mule and muleteer for your bags, the refuge dorm bed, and all meals. Book the refuge well ahead for spring and autumn weekends — they fill up. Tip the guide and muleteer around 10-15%.
May to October is the snow-free window. June and September offer the best weather. From November to April the route requires crampons, an ice axe and winter mountaineering experience.
We run guided 2-day Toubkal ascents with licensed Imlil guides throughout the summer season. Book the Mount Toubkal 2-day summit trek, or ask us about the 3-day acclimatisation route if you want a gentler approach.
Two days total. Day one is roughly 4-5 hours uphill from Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge. Day two is a 2-3 hour pre-dawn summit push, then 5-6 hours descending back to Imlil — a long, tiring second day.
You need solid fitness — the ability to hike 6-8 hours uphill with a daypack. No technical climbing is required in summer, but the 1,000 m ascent on day one and the summit morning at 4,000 m demand real stamina. Train for 4-6 weeks beforehand.
For most people, the summit morning — a pre-dawn start in the cold, a steep scree climb, and the altitude above 3,800 m. The final scramble to the summit block is short but exposed. The long descent on day two is also tough on the knees.
At the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner) at 3,207 m, a mountain hut with dorm beds, meals and basic facilities. Your guide books it in advance. Bring a sleeping bag liner for hygiene; bedding is provided.
A guided package runs $180-260 per person including licensed guide, mule for your bags, refuge dorm bed, and all meals. Tipping the guide and muleteer is customary — budget around 10-15% extra.
