Practical advice to help you travel confidently in Morocco — from the medina to the mountain to the desert.

Visas and entry requirements

Morocco offers visa-free entry for 90 days to citizens of EU countries, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and many others. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Entry by land from Algeria is currently not possible; entry from Spain via Ceuta and Melilla is straightforward.

Money and currency

Morocco uses the dirham (MAD). $1 = approximately 10 MAD. ATMs (guichets automatiques) are abundant in cities; airport ATMs offer reasonable rates. Tipping is expected in restaurants (10–15%), for guides (50–100 MAD/day), and for porters. Desert camps and mountain guesthouses often prefer cash.

Getting around Morocco

ONCF trains connect Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes, and Marrakech efficiently and comfortably. For the south (Ouarzazate, Sahara) and the Rif (Chefchaouen), private transport or bus (CTM/Supratours) is the standard. Our multi-day tours include all transport with a private driver-guide.

Health and safety

Morocco requires no specific vaccinations for most nationalities; hepatitis A and typhoid are sometimes recommended for longer trips. Tap water is safe in cities but many travellers prefer bottled. The sun is intense year-round — high-factor sunscreen is essential even in winter. Morocco's emergency number is 190 (police) and 150 (fire/ambulance).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need travel insurance for Morocco?
