The Complete Morocco Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

Hassan Ait Baha · 28 min · Morocco Travel Guide

A single, practical guide to planning your first Morocco trip — where to go, when, what it costs, how to get around, and how to travel safely and respectfully.

Morocco is a country that gets under your skin. In a single day you can bargain for spices in a thousand-year-old medina, drink mint tea with a Berber family in the Atlas Mountains, and watch the sun set over the Sahara from the back of a camel. It is close to Europe, affordable, and staggeringly diverse — yet it rewards a little planning. This guide brings together everything a first-time visitor needs to know.

Where to Go: The Essential Regions

Morocco is bigger than it looks. Rather than racing around, pick two or three regions and experience them properly. The classic first-time circuit links Marrakech, the High Atlas and the Sahara — a combination that delivers city, mountains and desert in a single, well-connected loop.

Marrakech

The natural entry point. Marrakech is a sensory overload of souks, palaces, gardens and the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Two full days here is ideal — one for the medina and souks, one for the gardens, palaces and a day trip to the Atlas or Agafay desert. See our Marrakech complete guide for a deep dive.

The High Atlas & Mount Toubkal

Just 90 minutes south of Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains offer trekking, Berber villages and North Africa's highest peak. A day hike in Imlil or Ourika Valley is the easiest taste; a 2- or 3-day Toubkal summit trek is the full adventure.

The Sahara (Merzouga & Erg Chebbi)

The image most people carry of Morocco — towering orange dunes, camel caravans and star-filled desert nights. Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes are the most spectacular and accessible. Allow 3-4 days for the round trip from Marrakech or Fez.

Fez, Chefchaouen & the North

Fez has the world's largest living medina and working tanneries. Chefchaouen, the famous blue city, sits in the Rif Mountains. Pair them for a northern loop, or combine Fez with a Sahara trip heading south.

The Atlantic Coast

Essaouira is the easy favourite — a breezy fortified port with great seafood, beaches and surf. Agadir and Taghazout add sun and waves further south.

When to Visit

Morocco has four distinct climate zones, so the "best time" depends on where you go. As a general rule, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most comfortable across the whole country. Summers are scorching in the desert and lowlands but perfect in the Atlas and coast. Winters bring snow to the mountains and are mild on the coast but cold at night in the desert.

What It Costs

Morocco is excellent value. A mid-range traveller spends roughly $50-90 per person per day covering a private room in a riad, local restaurants, taxis and entrance fees. Budget backpackers can manage on $25-40; luxury travellers $200+. Organised private tours typically run $120-250 per person per day all-in (guide, transport, accommodation, most meals). See our Morocco budget guide for a full breakdown.

Getting Around

For first-timers, a mix works best: trains between major cities (Marrakech, Fez, Rabat, Casablanca) are comfortable and cheap; private transport or a small-group tour is far better for the Atlas, desert and coast where public transport is limited. Hiring a car is straightforward and gives total flexibility outside the medinas. Our transportation guide covers every option.

Culture, Etiquette & Food

Moroccans are famously hospitable. A few courtesies go a long way: dress modestly, ask before photographing people, accept mint tea when offered (it's a gesture of welcome), and use your right hand for eating and greeting. The food is a highlight — tagine, couscous, harira soup, fresh bread, pastilla and street-food grills. Read our Morocco food guide before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is Morocco safe for first-time visitors?

Yes. Morocco is one of the most visited countries in Africa and tourism is a major industry. Violent crime is rare. The main annoyances are touts and unofficial "guides" in busy medinas — decline politely and use licensed guides booked through a reputable operator. Standard travel precautions apply.

How many days do I need for a first Morocco trip?

Seven to ten days is the sweet spot. In a week you can combine Marrakech, the High Atlas and the Sahara. Ten days lets you add Fez, Chefchaouen and the coast. Anything under five days is best spent in a single region.

Do I need a visa for Morocco?

Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and most other countries get 90 days visa-free on arrival. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your entry date. Always confirm with your embassy before travel.

What is the currency and can I use cards?

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Cards work in hotels and larger shops, but cash is essential in medinas, taxis and small villages. ATMs are widespread in cities; carry cash for rural areas.

What should I wear in Morocco?

Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered, especially in medinas and rural areas. Lightweight, breathable layers work for most of the year; add warm layers for desert nights and mountains. A scarf is useful for sun, dust and visiting religious sites.
