Getting Around Morocco: Transport Guide

Omar Benali · 9 min · Travel Guides

Trains, buses, grand taxis, car rental, domestic flights and private drivers — how to get around Morocco, with pros, cons and costs.

Morocco has a surprisingly good transport network, but the best option depends on where you are going. Cities and the imperial-city corridor are well served by rail; the desert, mountains and coast usually need a car or a driver.

Trains

ONCF trains are comfortable, air-conditioned and affordable, linking Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes, Meknes and Marrakech. The high-speed Al Boraq connects Tangier to Casablanca in just over two hours. Book first class for assigned seats on long routes.

Buses

CTM and Supratours are the reliable intercity bus companies, covering nearly every town. They are cheap, air-conditioned and run on time. Buy tickets a day ahead on busy routes. Local buses exist but are slow and crowded.

Grand taxis

Shared “grand taxis” (usually Mercedes sedans) connect nearby towns on fixed routes for a few dollars per seat. They leave when full and are the backbone of rural transport. For comfort, you can buy all the seats in a taxi.

Private driver / tour

For the Sahara, Atlas treks and multi-stop itineraries, a private driver-guide is by far the most efficient and pleasant option — and it is exactly what our tours provide. No haggling, no navigation, and a local expert at your side.

Car rental

Renting a car is viable for confident drivers and gives total freedom. Roads are generally good; city driving is chaotic. A 4x4 is useful for desert pistes. Carry your licence, insurance and a printed IDP if your licence is non-Roman script.

Domestic flights

Royal Air Maroc and low-cost carriers link Casablanca with Agadir, Ouarzazate, Dakhla, Errachidia and Laayoune — handy for cutting long desert drives, though most travellers see more by road.
