Is Morocco Safe? A Honest Safety Guide for Travellers

Crime, health, women travellers, scams, natural hazards and emergency numbers — an honest safety guide from our local team.

The short answer: yes, Morocco is safe for travellers, and it is one of the most visited countries in Africa. Violent crime is rare and Moroccans are famously hospitable. But like any destination, a little local knowledge keeps you out of avoidable trouble.

Crime & petty theft

Pickpocketing and bag-snatching can happen in crowded souks and bus stations. Use a cross-body bag, keep valuables in your hotel safe, and be cautious with phones in busy squares. Fake guides offering unsolicited tours are a known nuisance in Marrakech and Fes — politely decline and stick with your licensed guide.

Health

Tap water is not recommended for drinking — use bottled or filtered water. Food from busy, turnover-high stalls is generally safe; avoid raw salads in remote areas. Pharmacies are excellent and everywhere in cities. Carry insurance that covers medical evacuation, especially for trekking.

Women travellers

Thousands of women travel Morocco solo each year without incident. Dress modestly, ignore catcalls, and consider a fake wedding ring if it helps. Joining group tours (like ours) removes most hassle. Our female travellers consistently report feeling safe and welcomed.

Scams to know

Common ones: a local leading you to a “shortcut” then demanding a tip, herb-spice “pharmacy” upsells, and inflated taxi fares. Agree taxi prices before getting in (or insist on the meter), and treat any unsolicited help as a paid service.

Natural hazards

Desert heat is serious — carry water, avoid midday exertion in summer, and never trek alone. Mountain weather can change fast; altitude affects many on Toubkal. In winter, snow and ice on Toubkal require a qualified guide and equipment.
