Morocco is one of the world's great photography destinations. Here is where to go and how to make the most of every shoot.
The Merzouga dunes at golden hour offer textbook desert photography: warm light, graphic shadows, and clear sky. Arrive at the dune edge 60 minutes before sunset; stay for the blue hour 20 minutes after sunset which creates a cool-warm colour contrast that many prefer to the direct golden light. Dawn on the dunes is equally spectacular — wake at 5:30am and walk 10 minutes from camp.
The key to respectful street photography in Morocco is engagement before the camera. A greeting in Arabic, genuine curiosity about what someone is doing, and a small purchase from a market stall nearly always results in enthusiastic permission to photograph. Hidden-camera shooting of people without consent is disrespectful and increasingly unwelcome. Some residents request a small payment; this is entirely reasonable.
Our Chefchaouen Blue City Photography Tour includes all the best locations with optimal timing planned around the light. Our Sahara Photography Expedition is a 4-day tour specifically designed for serious photographers, with golden-hour and blue-hour dune sessions built into each day.
No permit is required for personal travel photography in public spaces. Photography inside mosques (generally not open to non-Muslims) and of military installations is prohibited.
A mirrorless camera with a 24–105mm equivalent zoom covers 90% of Morocco photography well. A wide prime (28mm) is ideal for medina alleyways. A 70–200mm is useful for portraits with distance. Sand and dust are real hazards — use a protective bag and UV filter.
