What to Leave Behind

Drones (restricted/illegal without permits), expensive jewellery (attracts attention), skimpy clothing for medinas, heavy hiking boots if you're not trekking, and more than one pair of jeans (too hot and heavy).

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear in Morocco?

Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered, especially in medinas and rural areas. Lightweight, breathable layers work for most of the year. Add warm layers for desert nights and mountains. A scarf is invaluable for sun, dust and visiting religious sites.

What should I pack for the Sahara desert?

Warm layers for the night (fleece, hat, gloves in winter), light long sleeves for sun by day, a scarf or shemagh for sand and sun, closed shoes for the camel trek plus camp sandals, a headlamp, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and a refillable bottle. See our Sahara guide.

Do I need special gear for a Toubkal trek?

Sturdy broken-in hiking boots, warm layers (summit nights drop below freezing), a waterproof shell, trekking poles, a headlamp, sun protection and a 25-30L daypack. In winter (Nov-Mar) add crampons and ice axe. See our Toubkal packing list.

Can I wear shorts in Morocco?

In tourist resorts and on the beach, yes. In medinas, rural areas and around religious sites, shorts (especially short shorts) are best avoided out of respect. Lightweight long trousers are the comfortable, respectful default for most of the country.
