Morocco Desert Tours: Merzouga vs Agafay vs Zagora

Hassan Ait Baha · 12 min · Sahara Desert Guide

A clear comparison of Morocco's three desert destinations — Merzouga, Agafay and Zagora — so you can choose the right one for your time and budget.

"The desert" in Morocco actually means three very different destinations, and choosing the wrong one for your time and expectations is the most common planning mistake. Merzouga, Agafay and Zagora each suit a different trip. This comparison makes the choice clear.

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, Morocco

Merzouga & Erg Chebbi — The Iconic Sahara

The full Sahara experience: towering 150m orange dunes, camel treks, desert camps and stars. The trade-off is distance — 9-10 hours from Marrakech, so you need at least 3 days. Best for: travellers with 3+ days who want the postcard Sahara. See our Merzouga guide.

Agafay — The Quick Desert Escape

A rocky stone desert 45 minutes from Marrakech. No sand dunes, but a dramatic lunar landscape, Atlas backdrop, excellent luxury camps and sunset dinners. Best for: travellers with limited time who want a desert night without the long drive. See our Agafay guide.

Zagora — The Closer, Quieter Sahara

About 7 hours from Marrakech, Zagora offers smaller dunes and a more austere, windswept desert feel. It's the closest "real" sand desert to Marrakech and suits travellers with 2 days who want dunes without the Merzouga drive. For truly remote dunes, Erg Chigaga beyond Zagora is spectacular but needs 2+ days and a 4x4.

Frequently asked questions

Which Moroccan desert has the best dunes?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) — dunes up to 150 metres, the classic orange Sahara of postcards. Zagora has smaller dunes; Agafay is a rocky desert with no sand dunes at all. For the iconic Sahara, choose Merzouga.

Which desert is closest to Marrakech?

Agafay is closest — just 45 minutes. Zagora is about 7 hours. Merzouga is 9-10 hours (usually broken with an overnight). If you have only one day, Agafay; if you have 2 days, Zagora; if you have 3+, Merzouga.

Can I do a desert trip in one day from Marrakech?

Only Agafay — a sunset dinner or camel ride and back the same evening. Merzouga and Zagora both require at least one overnight due to the drive. A 2-day trip reaches Zagora; Merzouga needs 3 days minimum.

Which is best for a luxury desert camp?

Merzouga has the widest range of luxury camps in the dunes. Agafay also has excellent luxury camps much closer to Marrakech. Zagora has fewer luxury options. For luxury + iconic dunes, Merzouga; for luxury + convenience, Agafay.
