Morocco is one of cycling's great undiscovered destinations. This guide covers every type of riding — from High Atlas mountain bike descents to multi-day gravel routes across the desert.
Morocco is one of the great undiscovered cycling destinations on earth. The country offers a staggering variety of terrain within a compact geography: technical singletrack through cedar forests, exposed ridge rides above 3,000 metres, long sandy piste routes threading between desert kasbahs, and smooth mountain passes where road cyclists can tick off serious altitude with jaw-dropping scenery. All of this within 90 minutes of Marrakech airport.
The High Atlas is mountain biking territory at its finest. Technical singletrack drops through juniper forest, rocky switchbacks demand precise line choice, and the descents from the high passes are long enough to make your brake hands ache. The Jebel Toubkal region, the Ourika Valley, and the M'Goun plateau are the three premier mountain biking zones. Expect roots, rocks, loose scree on descents, and the occasional shepherd's flock as trail obstacle.
Morocco was made for gravel biking. The network of piste routes — unpaved tracks connecting Berber villages, desert towns and mountain passes — covers thousands of kilometres of rideable terrain that drop-bar gravel bikes handle perfectly. Multi-day gravel tours crossing the Atlas or following the Draa Valley combine genuine adventure riding with remote overnight stops in village guesthouses.
The major Atlas passes — Tizi n'Tichka (2,260 m), Tizi n'Test (2,093 m), and the Ourika road — offer classic road cycling with consistent climbs and sweeping descents on smooth tarmac. Road cyclists training for altitude events or simply wanting big mountain miles in the sun find Morocco an excellent off-season training destination.
Pedal-assist e-bikes open the Marrakech foothills and palmeraie to cyclists of any fitness level. Half-day and full-day e-bike tours cover the Ourika Valley, the Palmeraie circuit, and the lower Imlil valley without requiring the fitness demanded by the mountain routes. Excellent for mixed-ability groups and families.
The premium MTB experience. Three days of guided singletrack, starting from Imlil, crossing the Tizi Ouanane pass (3,664 m — one of the highest bike-accessible passes in Morocco), and descending via the Azzadene Valley to Aroumd. Technical sections demand confident bike handling; total elevation is around 4,500 m across three days.
A 5-day point-to-point gravel route from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, crossing the Atlas via a combination of paved passes and dirt piste. Overnight stops at village guesthouses and small mountain lodges. Total distance approximately 320 km; daily averages of 60–70 km with 1,200–1,800 m elevation.
A 2-day road cycling experience: Day 1 climbs from Marrakech to the 2,260 m summit of Tizi n'Tichka (65 km, 1,600 m gain) with overnight at a summit auberge; Day 2 descends the southern side to Ouarzazate and transfers back to Marrakech. The road is exceptionally scenic and traffic is manageable outside summer.
Cycling tours start from $290 per person for a 3-day group mountain bike experience (including guide, rental bike, accommodation, and meals). The 5-day Atlas Gravel Traverse is $520 per person. Road cycling classics and e-bike days start from $95 per person including guide and bike. All tours operate with a maximum of 8 cyclists for a quality experience. See our departures page for upcoming group dates — private departures are available year-round.
It depends on your route. Full-suspension mountain bike for technical singletrack and rocky descents; hardtail or gravel bike for piste routes and backroad touring; road bike for paved mountain passes like Tizi n'Tichka; e-bike for accessible foothills and valley rides. We provide the right bike for your chosen tour.
No. We provide quality rental bikes appropriate for each tour. If you are an experienced cyclist who prefers to ride their own bike, we can accommodate this — contact us to discuss logistics. Bike bags for air travel are your responsibility.
March to May and September to November are ideal. Temperatures are comfortable for sustained effort, trails are in good condition, and daylight hours are long. Summer is hot for valley riding but cool at altitude; winter is manageable in the southern desert but cold at Atlas passes.
Most of our mountain bike tours are graded intermediate to advanced. You should be a confident rider comfortable on technical terrain, with good cardio fitness for sustained climbs. Our Atlas gravel tours are more accessible — gravel biking fitness is endurance-focused rather than technical.
