Morocco Cycling Best Season: When to Ride

Karim Zouiten · 7 min · Cycling

Morocco offers spectacular cycling across multiple terrains. Choosing the right season makes the difference between a comfortable ride and an ordeal.

Spring cycling: March to May (best overall)

The finest months for Atlas Mountain cycling. Temperatures are 10–22°C on the high routes, roads are dry and grippy, and the landscape is green and spectacular. April and May see wildflower blooms that make mid-altitude riding particularly beautiful. The Tizi n'Test and Tizi n'Tichka passes are at their most photogenic.

Summer cycling: June to August

High-altitude routes (2,000m+) remain manageable at 15–25°C; low-altitude routes become challenging in July–August heat. Start rides by 6am to complete significant climbing before noon. The Agafay desert is too hot for extended cycling in midsummer. The Atlantic coast near Essaouira and Taghazout is consistently windy and cool, making it the best summer cycling zone.

Autumn cycling: September to November (excellent)

Autumn mirrors spring quality with slightly more stable weather and less chance of spring rain. October is peak month: warm days (18–26°C on lower routes), clear air with exceptional visibility, and the harvest season atmosphere through village markets. The Dades and Draa Valley pistes are excellent in October.

Winter cycling: December to February

The High Atlas above 1,500m is cold and potentially snowy in winter. Low-altitude desert routes near Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley are scenic and rarely below 12°C during the day. Coastal cycling between Essaouira and Agadir remains viable year-round with a wind layer. Winter is the secret season for Moroccan desert cycling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the road surface like for cycling in Morocco?

Main roads are generally well-maintained. Mountain passes have good asphalt but sharp bends. Off-road pistes range from hard-packed gravel (very rideable) to soft sand (challenging). Gravel bikes handle most Moroccan terrain well.

Is it safe to cycle independently in Morocco?

Main roads carry fast traffic and are not recommended for solo cycling without route experience. Guided cycling on designated backroads and pistes is significantly safer and offers access to routes that are genuinely difficult to find independently.
