Morocco Culture & Etiquette: A Traveller’s Guide

Dress, greetings, religion, photography, Ramadan and tipping — how to be a respectful and welcome guest in Morocco.

Morocco is a Muslim-majority country with deep traditions of hospitality. A little cultural awareness makes you a welcome guest and unlocks warmer, more genuine encounters.

Dress

Dress modestly outside beach resorts — cover shoulders and knees. Loose, breathable clothing is both respectful and practical in the heat. A scarf is useful for mosques and conservative areas.

Greetings

A handshake and “salam alaikum” (peace be upon you) is the standard greeting. Use your right hand for handshakes, eating and passing items. Close friends of the same sex may kiss cheeks; do not initiate physical contact with the opposite sex.

Religion & Ramadan

Islam shapes daily life. Avoid drinking, eating or smoking in public during daylight in Ramadan (be discreet). Friday is the weekly holy day. Non-Muslims are generally not permitted inside mosques except Hassan II in Casablanca.

Photography

Always ask before photographing people — many will say yes, some will expect a small tip. Avoid photographing military or police buildings. In souks, ask shopkeepers before snapping their wares.

Tipping & bargaining

Tipping is expected (10% restaurants, small amounts for hotel staff and guides). Haggling in souks is normal and friendly — enjoy it as a conversation rather than a contest.
