Morocco Coastal Tours: Essaouira, Taghazout & Atlantic Adventures

Hassan Ait Baha · 15 min · Coastal & Beach

Morocco's Atlantic coast is one of the most underrated travel destinations in Africa — ancient port cities, world-class surf, wild beaches, and coastal hiking with the ocean always in view.

Morocco's Atlantic coast stretches 2,700 kilometres from Tangier in the north to Lagouira at the edge of the Sahara, encompassing ancient port cities, wild dune systems, world-class surf breaks, and fishing harbours where the boats still go out before dawn. The coast is a completely different Morocco from the inland cities and mountains — wind-scoured, silver-lit, smelling of the sea — and it is one of the country's great undiscovered pleasures.

Essaouira: The Windy City

Essaouira is the crown of Morocco's Atlantic coast — a fortified port city of extraordinary character, with blue-painted fishing boats, whitewashed ramparts, narrow alleys painted with cobalt and white, and a constant Atlantic breeze that keeps temperatures comfortable year-round. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved in Morocco.

The city has an artistic legacy out of proportion with its size: Orson Welles filmed Othello here; Jimi Hendrix famously spent time in the area in 1969; the annual Gnawa Music Festival (June) draws the world's finest gnawa musicians and international collaborators. Essaouira's relaxed, creative atmosphere is quite unlike the intense energy of Marrakech.

Taghazout: Morocco's Surf Capital

Taghazout is a small fishing village 20 km north of Agadir that became one of Morocco's most popular surf destinations after its consistent point breaks were "discovered" by European surfers in the 1970s. The breaks — Anchor Point, Hash Point, Mysteries, Panoramas — offer a full range of conditions from gentle beginners' beach to barrelling point break for advanced surfers.

Beyond the surf, Taghazout has a laid-back bohemian atmosphere — yoga retreats, surf schools, fresh-fish restaurants, and excellent sunsets over the open Atlantic. It is a world away from the tourist infrastructure of Agadir 20 km to the south.

Coastal Hiking

Between Essaouira and Agadir, the coastal path offers some of the most dramatic walking in Morocco: argan forest above wave-lashed cliffs, isolated beaches accessible only on foot, and Berber coastal villages where fishermen dry their catch on the rock. Our coastal hiking tours combine 3–4 hours of daily walking with accommodation in small riad-style guesthouses.

Frequently asked questions

Is Morocco good for surfing?

Morocco is one of the best surf destinations in Africa and increasingly popular with European surfers seeking uncrowded waves. Taghazout is the surf capital, with consistent beach and point breaks suitable for all levels. Essaouira and the area around Agadir also have excellent surf, particularly in autumn and winter.

What is Essaouira famous for?

Essaouira is famous for its intact Portuguese-built ramparts, its bluish fishing harbour, and the extraordinarily persistent Atlantic wind that has made it the wind sports capital of Morocco. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the annual Gnawa Music Festival in June draws global audiences.

Can you swim in the sea at Essaouira?

Yes, but the water is cold (18–22°C year-round) and the surf can be powerful on the main beach. Swimming is safe on calm days in the sheltered southern bay. The water is clean and unpolluted. A wetsuit is recommended for extended swimming outside summer.

How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?

Essaouira is approximately 175 km from Marrakech — a 2.5-hour drive via the A7 motorway to El-Jadida or the scenic coastal road through Chichaoua. Day trips from Marrakech are possible but we recommend staying at least 2 nights to fully appreciate the town.
