Hassan Ait Baha · 11 min · Practical Guides

Where to stay in Morocco — riads, hotels, desert camps, kasbahs and guesthouses, with prices, what to expect and how to choose.

Where you stay in Morocco is part of the experience — a riad in the medina, a kasbah-hotel in the south, a desert camp in the dunes. This guide covers every accommodation type, what to expect, what it costs and how to choose.

Riads — The Classic Choice

A riad is a traditional Moroccan courtyard house converted to a guesthouse — a handful of rooms around a central courtyard, often with a plunge pool, fountain and rooftop terrace. The best are in the Marrakech and Fez medinas. They're intimate, atmospheric and personal, run by owners who often cook breakfast and dinner. The medina is car-free, so arrange a porter for your bags.

Hotels

International-style hotels cluster in the ville nouvelles (modern districts) of Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat and Agadir, and in resort areas like the Marrakech Palmeraia and Agadir beachfront. They offer calm, easy car access, pools and predictable standards — good if you prefer quiet nights after intense medina days.

Kasbah-Hotels

In the south — Skoura, Dades, Tinerhir, Ouarzazate — restored mud-brick kasbahs have become atmospheric guesthouses, with thick walls (cool in summer, warm in winter), terrace views over oases and gorges, and traditional food. Staying in one is the most atmospheric accommodation in Morocco. See our South Morocco guide.

Guesthouses & Hostels

Budget guesthouses and hostels are widespread in Marrakech, Fez, Chefchaouen and Essaouira, offering dorm beds and simple private rooms from $12-45. They're social, great for meeting other travellers, and often in converted medina houses with rooftop terraces.

Frequently asked questions

What is a riad and should I stay in one?

A riad is a traditional Moroccan courtyard house converted to a guesthouse, usually with a handful of rooms around a central courtyard, often a plunge pool and a rooftop terrace. Staying in one — especially in the Marrakech or Fez medina — is the classic Morocco experience. They're more atmospheric than international hotels.

What is a desert camp like?

Camps range from basic shared tents with shared toilets to luxury en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers and fine dining. All include dinner, breakfast, a camel trek and campfire entertainment. Nights are cold year-round — bring warm layers. See our Sahara guide.

How much does accommodation cost in Morocco?

Hostel dorms $12-20, budget riads $25-45, mid-range riads $50-90, 4-star $90-150, 5-star riads $150-400+. Standard desert camps $30-60 per person, luxury camps $100-250 per person. See our budget guide.

Where should I stay in Marrakech?

A riad inside the medina for the authentic experience (car-free, arrange a porter for bags). The modern Gueliz district for calm and easy car access. The Palmeraie for resort-style luxury. Most travellers choose a medina riad for the atmosphere.
