Riads, dars, kasbahs, desert camps and hotels — what each offers and how to choose where to stay in Morocco.
Where you stay in Morocco is part of the experience. The traditional riad — a city house built around a courtyard garden — is the signature Moroccan stay, and there are options for every budget.
A riad is a multi-storey city home around an interior garden courtyard; a dar is a smaller townhouse around a courtyard. Both offer an intimate, atmospheric base inside the medina, often with a rooftop. They range from $40 budget rooms to $400+ designer boutique suites.
In the south and along the kasbah route, converted mud-brick kasbahs and village guesthouses (gîtes) offer a taste of rural Berber life. Our treks and desert tours include nights in hand-picked guesthouses and gîtes.
Sahara camps range from basic Berber bivouacs to luxury en-suite tents with real beds and hot showers. Our Sahara tours include comfortable camps with dinner, breakfast and stargazing.
Modern hotels cluster in the new towns (Gueliz in Marrakech, Ville Nouvelle in Fes) and at beach resorts. They are convenient but lack the character of a riad — we recommend at least one riad night in each imperial city.
For atmosphere, stay inside the medina in a riad. For easy car access and quiet nights, choose a hotel in the new town. For the desert, a camp is the point. Our tours include hand-picked accommodation matched to your comfort level.
