14-Day Morocco Itinerary: Complete North to South Journey

Leila Fassi · 17 min · Itineraries

Two weeks, north to south: Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fez, the Sahara, Marrakech and the coast.

This 14-day north-to-south grand tour is the complete Morocco experience. Starting in Tangier and ending on the Atlantic coast, it takes in the Blue City of Chefchaouen, the imperial city of Fez, the Sahara at Merzouga, the kasbah country, Marrakech and Essaouira — every headline Morocco landscape in a single, well-paced southward flow.

Day 1 — Tangier

Arrive in Tangier and explore the port city's medina, the Kasbah of the Udayas-style Kasbah Museum, and the Corniche. A welcome dinner and briefing for the two weeks ahead.

Days 2–3 — Chefchaouen

Travel south into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, the Blue City. Two days to wander the blue lanes (best at dawn), hike to the Spanish Mosque for sunset, and take an optional Akchour waterfalls half-trip. An overnight lets you see the medina in the quiet morning light.

Days 4–5 — Fez

Travel south to Fez for two days in the world's oldest living medina. A licensed guide is essential — the Chouara Tannery, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin and the Merenid Tombs for sunset. Two days gives you depth plus a free afternoon for a cooking class or hammam.

Days 6–8 — Sahara Loop to Merzouga

Depart Fez on a three-day Sahara loop to Merzouga: the Cedar Forest and Barbary macaques on day 6, Errachidia and the drive to Merzouga with a sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi on day 7, sunrise and a full desert day on day 8. The night in a desert camp under the stars is the trip's centrepiece.

Day 9 — Dades Valley & Aït Ben Haddou

Leave the desert and drive through Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley — the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" — to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO ksar. Overnight nearby to enjoy the ksar at sunset.

Days 10–12 — Marrakech

Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech for three days: two guided medina days (palaces, souks, Jemaa el-Fnaa) and one Atlas day trip to Imlil or Ourika. Three days gives you city depth, a mountain contrast and rest time.

Days 13–14 — Essaouira & Departure

Head west to Essaouira for a final two days on the Atlantic — ramparts, harbour seafood, beach and a relaxed pace. Day 14 is your departure transfer to Marrakech or Casablanca. If you fly out of Casablanca, a stop at the Hassan II Mosque is a fitting finale.

What to Budget

A private 14-day version runs approximately $1,800–2,800 per person (private driver-guide, riads and kasbah hotels, guided tours, desert camp, many meals). Luxury riads and a private luxury camp raise the total. International flights are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Is 14 days enough for a north-to-south Morocco tour?

Yes. Two weeks covers Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fez, the Sahara, Marrakech and the Atlantic coast at a relaxed pace with rest days. It is the ideal length for a complete grand tour with minimal backtracking.

How much does a 14-day north-to-south Morocco trip cost?

A mid-range private 14-day trip runs roughly $1,800–2,800 per person including private transport, riads and hotels, guided tours, the desert camp and many meals. Luxury raises the total; group travel lowers it. Flights are extra.

Do I fly into Tangier and out of Marrakech?

Ideally yes — this is a one-way north-to-south itinerary, so an open-jaw flight (into Tangier, out of Marrakech or Casablanca) avoids backtracking. If you must return to Tangier, add a travel day.

What is the best route for 14 days north to south?

Tangier (1 day) → Chefchaouen (2 days) → Fez (2 days) → Sahara loop to Merzouga (3 days) → Dades/Aït Ben Haddou → Marrakech (3 days) → Essaouira (2 days) → departure. A logical southward flow.

Can this 14-day itinerary be customised?

Yes — every itinerary we build is private and tailor-made. Add a Toubkal summit trek, swap the coast for more mountains, or upgrade to luxury riads throughout. Tell us your vision via the plan-my-trip form.
