Moroccan History: From Ancient Kingdoms to Modern Nation

Leila Fassi · 14 min · Culture

From Amazigh kingdoms and Roman Volubilis to the great dynasties, the colonial era and independence — a clear, engaging history of Morocco and where to see it.

Morocco’s history is among the richest and most continuous of any nation on earth — a story of Amazigh kingdoms, Roman cities, powerful Islamic dynasties, a colonial interlude and a modern kingdom that still traces its rulers back centuries. Understanding this history deepens every visit, turning medinas, kasbahs and monuments into chapters of an epic narrative.

This guide traces Morocco from its pre-Islamic origins through the great dynasties, the colonial period and independence to the modern nation, pointing to the sites where you can see history for yourself.

Pre-Islamic Morocco

Long before Islam, the region was home to Amazigh kingdoms and became part of the Carthaginian and then Roman worlds. The Roman city of Volubilis, near Meknes, preserves mosaics, arches and columns from this era, when the province of Mauretania Tingitana flourished on the empire’s edge.

The Coming of Islam and the Idrisids

Islam arrived in the 7th and 8th centuries, and the Idrisid dynasty, founded by a descendant of the Prophet, established Fes as a centre of learning and faith. Fes remains Morocco’s spiritual capital, home to the al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often cited as the world’s oldest university.

The Great Dynasties

Almoravids and Almohads

These 11th and 12th-century Amazigh dynasties built empires stretching into Spain and West Africa, founding Marrakech and raising monuments such as the Koutoubia minaret.

Marinids and Saadians

The Marinids adorned Fes with exquisite madrasas, while the Saadians made Marrakech magnificent, leaving the El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs.

The Alaouite Dynasty

The Alaouite dynasty, which still reigns today, came to power in the 17th century and unified the country. Sultan Moulay Ismail made Meknes a grand imperial capital, its vast walls and gates still standing.

The Colonial Period

In the early 20th century, Morocco came under French and Spanish protectorates. This era reshaped cities with new districts (the villes nouvelles), infrastructure and the Art Deco architecture of Casablanca, while nationalist movements grew.

Independence and Modern Morocco

Morocco regained independence in 1956 under the returning Sultan, later King, Mohammed V. The modern kingdom has since balanced tradition and modernity, investing in tourism, infrastructure and heritage while preserving its rich cultural identity.
