Merzouga has the big dunes; Zagora is closer and quieter. Here is how to choose your Sahara.
Merzouga and Zagora are the two main Sahara gateways from Marrakech, and travellers often weigh them against each other. They offer the same essential experience — a camel trek, a desert camp and a starry night — but differ sharply in dune size, drive time and atmosphere. This guide compares them directly.
This is the biggest difference. Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes rise over 150 metres — vast, golden and photogenic, the Sahara of the imagination. Zagora's dunes are smaller and lower, more like rolling sand hills. If the iconic big-dune experience matters, Merzouga is the clear winner.
Zagora is roughly 7 hours from Marrakech via the Draa Valley, feasible as a 2-day, 1-night trip. Merzouga is 9–10 hours, normally done as a 3-day tour with overnight stops in the Dades Valley. If you only have two days, Zagora is your only realistic Sahara option.
Both routes are scenic. The Zagora route follows the Draa Valley, a vast date-palm oasis with kasbahs and the ancient settlement of Tamegroute. The Merzouga route crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Dades and Todra gorges — arguably the more spectacular journey. The Merzouga route is the more complete tour.
Both offer desert camps with camel treks, Berber dinner, music and stargazing. Merzouga's camps sit inside or at the foot of the big dunes, with a more dramatic setting. Zagora's camps are simpler and quieter, often less crowded. Both deliver the memorable night under the stars.
Zagora 2-day tours are a little cheaper and shorter. Merzouga 3-day tours cost more but include more — the gorges, Ait Ben Haddou and the big dunes. The price difference reflects duration and inclusions more than quality.
Our 3-Day Sahara Desert Tour to Merzouga is the flagship Sahara experience. For a shorter trip, our Zagora Sahara Desert 3-Day Tour via the Draa Valley is the alternative. Tell us your available days via the plan-my-trip form and we will match you to the right desert.
Merzouga, by some distance. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga has dunes over 150 metres tall — the iconic Sahara. Zagora's dunes (around Tinfou and M'Hamid) are smaller and more modest. If towering dunes are the goal, choose Merzouga.
Zagora is closer — roughly 360 km / 7 hours, doable as a 2-day trip. Merzouga is 560 km / 9–10 hours, normally a 3-day trip. If you only have two days, Zagora is the realistic option.
Yes, if time is short. Zagora still delivers a real desert camp, camel trek and starry night, plus the beautiful Draa Valley palm oasis en route. It is a genuine Sahara taste without the longer commitment.
Both are excellent — far from city light. Merzouga's dunes add a dramatic foreground for astrophotography. Zagora is quieter and less visited, so camps can feel more solitary.
Realistically only to Zagora. A 2-day trip to Merzouga would be almost entirely driving with no time at the dunes — not recommended. For Merzouga, allow at least 3 days.
