Merzouga Town & Surroundings: Desert Gateway Guide

Hassan Ait Baha · 10 min · Destinations

Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi — the town, the dunes, the camps and the desert culture around them.

Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, the great dune sea of south-eastern Morocco and the Sahara experience most travellers picture when they imagine a Morocco trip. The village itself is modest — a string of small hotels and camps along the dune line — but the surroundings are extraordinary: 150-metre dunes, Gnawa music villages, nomad families, fossil beds and some of the clearest night skies on earth.

The Village of Merzouga

Merzouga sits at the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a 28-km-long field of dunes that rise to over 150 metres. The village is small — a few hundred residents, a cluster of hotels and auberges, and the departure point for camel treks into the dunes. Most visitors spend a night in a hotel or auberge and a night in a desert camp, or two nights in camp.

Erg Chebbi: The Dunes

Erg Chebbi is the climax of any Sahara trip. The dunes change colour through the day — pale gold at noon, deep orange at sunset, pink at dawn. A sunset camel trek into the dunes, a night in a camp under a sky thick with stars, and a sunrise climb to a dune top are the three moments travellers remember longest. Our Merzouga 3-Day Sahara Desert Tour is built around all three.

Khamlia & Gnawa Music

A few kilometres from Merzouga, the village of Khamlia is home to a community of Gnawa musicians — descendants of sub-Saharan traders whose hypnotic drum-and-string music is a UNESCO-recognised tradition. A visit typically includes a performance of Gnawa music and mint tea; it is one of the most rewarding desert-culture stops.

Nomad Families & 4x4 Excursions

Beyond the dunes, semi-nomadic Berber families still move with their herds across the desert fringe. A 4x4 excursion can visit a nomad family in their tent, share tea, and learn about a way of life that is steadily disappearing. Other 4x4 stops include fossil beds, the Dayet Srji salt lake (flamingos in spring) and the underground khettara water channels.

Sandboarding & Dune Activities

The big dunes are a natural sandboard park — rent a board at camp and clamber up for a fast descent. Sunrise and sunset hikes to remote dune corners, quad biking on the flats, and simply sitting on a dune watching the light change are all part of a Merzouga stay.

Desert Camps: Standard vs Luxury

A standard camp offers shared or private Berber tents with communal bathrooms — authentic and comfortable. A luxury camp adds private ensuite tents with real beds, hot showers and full dinner service, sometimes a pool. The luxury upgrade is the single biggest comfort decision on a Sahara trip; we offer both and can mix them across your nights.

Frequently asked questions

What is Merzouga?

Merzouga is a small desert village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of dunes rising over 150 metres in south-eastern Morocco. It is the main gateway to the Sahara for travellers coming from Marrakech or Fes, and the base for camel treks and desert camps.

How do you get to Merzouga?

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech (9–10 hours via the Atlas and Dades Valley) and 450 km from Fes (7–8 hours). Most visitors arrive on a 3–4 day desert tour with a driver-guide; the nearest airport is Errachidia, 2 hours north.

What is there to do around Merzouga?

Sunset and sunrise camel treks into Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, 4x4 excursions to nomad families and the Khamlia Gnawa village, sandboarding on the big dunes, and stargazing on a moonless night.

What is the desert camp like?

Camps range from simple shared Berber tents to luxury camps with private ensuite bathrooms, real beds and full dinner service. All include a sunset camel trek, a Berber dinner and breakfast, and an extraordinary night sky. We offer both standard and luxury options.

When is the best time to visit Merzouga?

October to April offers the best desert weather — warm days and cool but bearable nights. Avoid July and August when daytime desert heat reaches 45–50°C. Winter nights are cold but the camps are heated and the skies are spectacular.
