How to visit Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes — Morocco's most spectacular Sahara, with desert camps, camel treks, stargazing and practical tips.
Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi — the most spectacular sand dunes in Morocco and the Sahara experience most travellers picture. A 28km field of dunes rising to 150 metres, glowing orange at dawn and dusk, with desert camps at their feet and camel treks leading into the silence. This is the deep Sahara, and it's worth every kilometre of the drive.
Erg Chebbi is a vast field of wind-sculpted dunes on the edge of the Sahara. The sand is fine and orange, the silence is total, and the light at sunrise and sunset is extraordinary. The dunes are the reason to come — climb one for sunset, ride a camel across them, and sleep at their edge.
Camps sit at the foot of the dunes, reached by camel or 4x4. Standard camps have simple shared or private tents with shared toilets. Luxury camps offer en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers and quality dining. All include dinner, breakfast, a camel trek and Berber music around the fire. See our Merzouga 3-day Sahara tour.
The classic Merzouga experience: a 45-90 minute camel trek into the dunes as the sun sets, arriving at camp on foot. The sunrise trek back is just as memorable. Camels are led by a Berber guide — no experience needed, just a willingness to sit still for an hour.
With zero light pollution, the Erg Chebbi night sky is staggering — the Milky Way casts shadows on a moonless night. After dinner and drumming around the campfire, step away from the fire and look up. Bring warm layers; desert nights are cold even in summer.
October to April. Summer days exceed 45°C and are unpleasant; nights remain warm. Winter nights drop near freezing but days are perfect. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
From a 3-day Marrakech loop to a luxury 4-day expedition, we have a Merzouga tour for every traveller. Book your Merzouga desert tour and sleep under the Sahara stars.
The highest dunes in Erg Chebbi reach about 150 metres. The dune field stretches roughly 28 km from north to south and 5-7 km wide — a vast wall of orange sand.
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech (a 9-10 hour drive, usually broken with an overnight) and 450 km from Fez (about 7 hours). The nearest airport is Errachidia, with limited flights. Most travellers come by private tour or bus.
3 days from Marrakech is the minimum to reach Merzouga with an overnight in the desert. 4 days is more relaxed. From Fez, 2-3 days works. A single night in a desert camp is the core experience.
They range from basic shared tents to luxury en-suite camps with real beds and hot showers. Our tours clearly state the camp standard. All include dinner, breakfast and a camel trek.
