It's the single most popular multi-day tour in the country, and for good reason. Here are the two best itineraries.
The 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary
- Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka pass → Ait Benhaddou (UNESCO kasbah) → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley (overnight in a kasbah-hotel)
- Day 2: Dades → Todra Gorge → Tinerhir → Erfoud → Merzouga → camel trek into Erg Chebbi → desert camp overnight (sunset, dinner, stars)
- Day 3: Sahara sunrise → 4x4/road back via the same route or Draa Valley → return to Marrakech by evening
Tight but delivers the icons. The Day 3 drive back is long (8-9 hours). If you can, take the 4-day.
The 4-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary
- Day 1: Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley (overnight)
- Day 2: Dades → Todra Gorge → Merzouga → camel trek → desert camp overnight
- Day 3: Sahara sunrise → explore Merzouga (Khamlia Gnawa village, nomad families, fossil beds) → overnight in a Merzouga hotel or a second desert night
- Day 4: Return to Marrakech via the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate, or the direct route — arrive evening
