Is a Sahara Desert Trip from Marrakech Worth It?

The Sahara is spectacular — but it is a long way from Marrakech. Here is an honest look at whether the trip is worth it for you.

The short answer is yes — for most travellers, a Sahara desert trip is the single most memorable part of a Morocco holiday. The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga rise 150 metres from a flat hammada, the silence at night is extraordinary, and a sunset camel trek into the sand sea is an experience that photographs cannot quite capture. But it is a long way from Marrakech, so it is worth understanding what the journey really involves before you commit.

How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are roughly 560 km and 9–10 hours of driving from Marrakech. That is why a genuine Sahara tour needs a minimum of three days — any less and you spend most of your trip in the car. The drive itself is part of the experience (the Tizi n'Tichka Atlas pass, Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge), but it is a real time commitment.

What makes it worth it

When it might not be worth it

If you only have one or two free days, the Sahara is not the right choice — the driving dominates. In that case, the Agafay stone desert just 30 minutes from Marrakech gives you a camel ride, sunset and a candlelit dinner without the long drive. Likewise, from May to September the desert is extremely hot (45°C and above) and not comfortable for active touring.

The honest verdict

If you have three or more days and you are travelling between October and April, the Sahara is unambiguously worth it. It is the experience most travellers remember longest. If you are short on time, choose Agafay instead and save the Sahara for a return trip.
