Imlil is the gateway to Mount Toubkal — a Berber mountain village of guesthouses, mules and walnut groves.
Imlil is the gateway to the High Atlas. At 1,740 metres, 90 minutes south of Marrakech, this small Berber village is the starting point for nearly every Mount Toubkal trek and the most accessible Atlas day trip from the city. With its walnut groves, mule trails and rooftop terraces looking up to North Africa's highest peak, Imlil is the easiest way to trade Marrakech's chaos for mountain calm.
Imlil is a traditional Berber (Amazigh) village of flat-roofed mud-brick and stone houses stacked into the hillside, terraced with walnut, apple and cherry orchards. Life moves at mountain pace — mules carry goods up the trails, women tend terraces, and the call to prayer echoes off the valley walls. It is a working village, not a tourist prop, and tourism income is a vital supplement to farming.
Imlil is the standard start point for climbing Mount Toubkal (4,167m), North Africa's highest peak. The classic route runs Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge on day one, then a pre-dawn summit push and descent on day two; a three-day version adds an acclimatisation day. Our Mount Toubkal 2-Day Summit Trek and 3-Day version both start here.
You don't have to climb Toubkal to enjoy Imlil. A gentle walk from the village to Aroumd and the Sidi Chamharouch shrine — a pilgrimage site by a mountain stream — is a rewarding half-day. The Three Valleys trek links Imlil, Muq and Imenane valleys with a Berber lunch in a family home. Our Imlil Village & Toubkal Foothills Day Hike is ideal for first-timers and families.
Imlil has Berber guesthouses ranging from simple dorm rooms to comfortable ensuite doubles, many with rooftop terraces and direct mountain views. A night here before a Toubkal trek lets you acclimatise and start fresh; a night after is a well-earned rest. For summit treks, the overnight is at the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m).
A licensed mountain guide is required for Toubkal and strongly recommended for any multi-day Atlas trek — the terrain is remote and weather can change fast. Mules carry group equipment and luggage, supporting the local mountain economy. We provide certified English-speaking guides and mule portage on all our Imlil-based treks.
April to October is the snow-free trekking season, with green valleys in spring and comfortable walking temperatures. November to March brings snow to the summit, requiring crampons and winter experience. Day hikes are pleasant year-round, though winter walks stick to the lower valleys.
Our Imlil Village & Toubkal Foothills Day Hike is the easiest introduction, and the Mount Toubkal 2-Day Summit Trek is the classic summit. Tell us your fitness, dates and group size via the plan-my-trip form and we will match you to the right Imlil experience.

Imlil is about 65 km from Marrakech, a 90-minute drive through the Moulay Brahim gorge. Grand taxis run from Marrakech, but most visitors take a private transfer or a guided day trip that includes the drive and a local mountain guide.
For village walks and the lower trails, a guide is recommended but not strictly required. For any Toubkal summit trek or multi-day Atlas trek, a licensed mountain guide is required and strongly advised for safety. We provide certified guides for all our treks.
