Imlil is the gateway to Atlas trekking — here are the best day hikes, multi-day routes, Berber villages, refuges, guides and costs.
Imlil is the trekking capital of Morocco — a small Berber village at 1,740 m in the High Atlas, 90 minutes south of Marrakech, and the starting point for almost every Toubkal and Atlas trek. But you do not have to be a summit-bound mountaineer to enjoy it. Imlil offers some of the best day hikes in Morocco, easy village walks, and a genuine window into Berber mountain life. This guide covers everything you can do from Imlil, from a half-day stroll to a multi-day traverse.
The easiest option — a half-day walk from Imlil through neighbouring villages like Armed and Achayn, with views up to Toubkal and a mint-tea stop in a village house. Moderate fitness, no technical ground, and a perfect introduction to Atlas hiking for families and first-timers.
A full-day moderate loop through the Imnane and Mizane valleys, crossing low passes between Berber villages. It delivers the mountain scenery and village culture of a trek without the summit commitment or overnight stay — ideal if you have one day and reasonable fitness.
Imlil is the start point for the 2-day and 3-day Toubkal ascents, the Azzaden Valley traverse, and longer circuits toward Mgoun. If you want a summit, the 2-day Toubkal trek is the classic; if you want quiet and acclimatisation, the 3-day Azzaden route. See our Mount Toubkal guide for the full route comparison.
The villages around Imlil — Armed, Achayn, Tizi Oussem — are predominantly Berber (Amazigh), with flat-roofed mud-brick houses stacked into the hillsides and a life organised around family, farming and the weekly market. Walking between them with a local guide is the most direct way to understand this culture, far more than any museum. Accept offered tea, ask before photographing people, and buy snacks from village shops where you can.
Imlil has guesthouses ranging from budget dorms to comfortable lodges with hot showers, heating and home-cooked meals. Staying the night before a trek is standard — you start walking fresh instead of driving up from Marrakech at dawn. Your guide or operator will book the right option for your route and budget.
A guided day hike from Imlil runs $50-90 per person including transport from Marrakech. Multi-day treks run $120-200 per person per day all-in. Licensed guides are required in the national park and strongly recommended everywhere — they handle route-finding, mules, refuge bookings and emergencies.
April to June and September to November are ideal. Summer is fine for day hikes but hot in the valleys by afternoon. Winter brings snow to the upper trails; stick to the village loop and lower valleys if you lack winter gear.
We run guided day hikes and multi-day treks from Imlil with licensed local guides. Start with the Imlil village day hike, or plan a Toubkal summit through our plan-my-trip form.
Yes — the Imlil village loop to Armed and Achayn is a popular half-day hike with views to Toubkal, and the 3 Valleys trek is a full-day moderate loop. Neither requires summit ambitions, and both suit average fitness.
Imlil is about 65 km south of Marrakech, a 90-minute drive. Shared grand taxis run from Marrakech, but most trekkers arrange a private transfer through their guide or tour operator for convenience and timing.
For the popular village loop you can walk self-guided, but a guide adds local insight and supports the community. For any route into the national park or toward Toubkal, a licensed guide is required.
Imlil has a range of guesthouses and small lodges from budget dorms to comfortable rooms with hot showers and meals. It is the standard pre-trek overnight spot, letting you start walking fresh rather than driving up from Marrakech.
For a summit, the 2- or 3-day Toubkal trek. For a moderate day, the 3 Valleys trek. For an easy introduction, the village loop to Armed. Imlil is the hub for all of them.
