Imlil is the High Atlas's most rewarding trekking base — here is everything you need to plan the perfect valley trek.
Imlil (1,740m) sits at the confluence of three High Atlas valleys and serves as the main gateway to Mount Toubkal. The village itself is a genuine Berber community — not a tourist construction — with walnut orchards, irrigation channels, and stone houses stepping up the valley walls. From Imlil, trails fan out in all directions: upward to Toubkal, across to the adjacent Azzaden and Rhirhaia valleys, and down through villages few visitors reach.
The Imlil valley's villages — Aroumd, Tamatert, Tacheddirt, Sidi Chamharouch — are all active communities where trekkers are warmly welcomed. Mint tea in a Berber family home, purchased walnuts from a roadside seller, and a shared lunch at a village guesthouse are some of the most memorable moments of any Imlil trek. A local guide ensures these interactions are genuine rather than transactional.
Accommodation in Imlil ranges from simple guesthouses to comfortable licensed riads. The trek season runs March–November; at peak summer, start walks before 8am to avoid valley heat. Mule support to carry main bags is available and highly recommended for multi-day routes. All our Imlil treks include certified local guides, mule support where needed, and home-cooked Berber lunches.
Imlil is approximately 65km south of Marrakech — about 1.5 hours by road. Our transfers include pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech.
Guides are mandatory for Toubkal summit attempts. For valley walks around Imlil, experienced trekkers can walk independently, though a local guide adds cultural context and ensures you find the best routes through villages.
April–June and September–November are ideal. Wildflowers bloom in spring; autumn brings crisp air and harvest atmosphere. July–August is hot in the valleys. December–March can bring snow above 2,000m.
