Imlil & Mount Toubkal Guide: Trekking, Villages & Accommodation

Hassan Ait Baha · 15 min · Atlas Mountains

Everything for Imlil and Mount Toubkal — the gateway village, summit trek options, fitness needs, accommodation, seasons and booking.

Imlil is the gateway to Mount Toubkal and the most popular trekking base in Morocco. A small Berber village at 1,740 m, just 90 minutes from Marrakech, it sits at the head of the Mizane Valley beneath North Africa's highest peak. Whether you want a gentle village walk or a full summit bid, Imlil is where it begins.

The Village of Imlil

Imlil is a cluster of stone and mud-brick houses terraced into the valley side, with walnut groves, a stream, and mules as the main transport. It has a handful of guesthouses, cafes and trekking shops. Arrive early to start walking before the midday heat, and take time for mint tea on a rooftop terrace.

Mount Toubkal Summit Treks

At 4,167 m, Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and a non-technical trek — no ropes or climbing skills, just fitness and stamina. Three main itineraries suit different fitness and time budgets.

See our complete Toubkal trekking guide for route detail, fitness requirements and packing lists.

Day Hikes from Imlil

If a summit trek is too much, Imlil offers excellent day walks: the climb to the village of Aroumd with valley views, the trek to the Tizi Mzik pass, or a gentle walk through the walnut groves to neighbouring villages. Our Imlil village day hike is the easy option.

Accommodation in Imlil

Imlil has simple guesthouses and a few comfortable lodges. The Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m provides dormitory accommodation and meals for summit treks. For a more comfortable experience, our 3- and 4-day treks use better guesthouses and private rooms where available.

Best Season

April to June and September to November are prime. Summer is hot and crowded; winter (November-March) brings snow and ice above 3,000 m and requires crampons and winter skills. See our Toubkal seasons guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Imlil from Marrakech?

Imlil is about 65 km and a 90-minute drive south of Marrakech. Most trekkers take a private transfer or a shared taxi to Asni then a local taxi up to Imlil. Our treks include Marrakech-Imlil transfers.

Do I need a guide to climb Toubkal?

Since 2018 a licensed mountain guide is required to climb Toubkal. The rule is for safety — the route is non-technical but remote and weather can change fast. Our treks include certified guides.

How hard is the Toubkal summit trek?

Non-technical but physically demanding. The 2-day version needs good fitness (4-5 hours hiking with ascent). The 3- and 4-day versions are more comfortable with acclimatisation. No climbing gear needed in summer.

Where do I sleep on a Toubkal trek?

Most trekkers stay at the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m (dormitory-style bunks, meals provided). The 3- and 4-day versions also use a guesthouse in Imlil. Luxury options use private mountain lodges.
