Everything for hiking in Morocco — easy day hikes, challenging multi-day treks, the best trails in the Atlas, Rif and gorges, with seasons and costs.
Hiking is the simplest way to experience Morocco beyond its cities, and you do not need to be a mountaineer to do it. A morning walk through the Ourika Valley's waterfalls, an afternoon loop above Imlil, or a gentle trail through the Rif's fir forests near Chefchaouen — these are some of the most rewarding hours you can spend in the country. This guide covers the full range of Moroccan hiking, from easy half-day walks to multi-day treks, and helps you pick the right trail for your fitness and time.
The easiest introduction to Atlas hiking, a half-day walk from Imlil through neighbouring Berber villages like Armed and Achayn, with views up to Toubkal. Moderate fitness, no technical ground, and a mint-tea stop in a village house along the way.
A popular day trip from Marrakech combining a scenic drive with a walk up to the seven waterfalls above Setti Fatma. The lower falls are easy; the upper cascades involve some light scrambling. Busy in high season, best midweek.
A gentle, beautiful walk through the Rif's limestone gorge to the God's Bridge and Akchour falls. Ideal for families and first-timers, with swimming spots in summer. A 20-minute taxi ride from Chefchaouen.
A half-day walk around Morocco's highest waterfall (110 m), with Barbary macaques, swimming pools at the base, and riverside cafes. An easy day trip from Marrakech.
When you have more time, the Atlas opens up. The 2-day Toubkal summit is the classic weekend trek; the 3-day Azzaden route adds quiet and acclimatisation; the 5-6 day Mgoun traverse is a genuine expedition. In the south, the Dades and Todra gorges offer 2-3 day gorge and rim walks, and Jebel Saghro is a superb winter desert-mountain trek. See our trekking in Morocco guide for the full route breakdown.
Morocco has hikes at every level. Easy: Imlil loop, Akchour, Ouzoud, Paradise Valley — suitable for anyone in reasonable shape. Moderate: Ourika upper falls, the 3 Valleys trek, Rif 2-day treks. Strenuous: Toubkal, Mgoun, Saghro traverses — these need real fitness and preparation. Always read the route description honestly before booking.
Spring and autumn are the best all-round seasons. Summer suits only the high Atlas and coast; the desert and lowlands are too hot. Winter is excellent for the gorges, Saghro and lower trails, but snow closes the high peaks to all but mountaineers.
Day hikes with a guide run $50-90 per person including transport from Marrakech. Self-guided popular routes cost only transport and any entry fees. Multi-day guided treks run $120-200 per person per day all-in. For anything beyond the busiest day paths, a guide is worth far more than it costs.
We run guided day hikes and multi-day treks across Morocco. Start with the Imlil village day hike, the Ourika Valley day trip, or tell us what you want to see and we'll build a custom hiking itinerary through our plan-my-trip form.
The Imlil village loop, the Ourika Valley walk to Setti Fatma waterfalls, the Akchour waterfalls from Chefchaouen, and the Ouzoud waterfalls walk. All are achievable in a day from Marrakech or Chefchaouen with a guide or even self-guided on the popular routes.
On well-trodden day routes like Imlil and Ourika you can, but paths are largely unmarked and a guide adds safety and local insight. For any multi-day trek, the High Atlas national park, or remote areas, a licensed guide is required or strongly recommended.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) for most regions. Summer is too hot for the desert and lowlands but good in the high Atlas. Winter is fine for the gorges and lower trails but snow blocks the high peaks.
Yes, with basic precautions. Use licensed guides for anything beyond popular day walks, carry water and sun protection, and be honest about your fitness on mountain routes. The main risks are heat, altitude on the high peaks, and getting lost on unmarked paths.
Modest, breathable layers covering shoulders and knees, sturdy broken-in boots, a sun hat, and a warm layer for altitude or early starts. A scarf is useful for sun and dust. Avoid cotton in the mountains — it stays cold when damp.
