Dades or Todra? A comparison of south Morocco's two great gorges for trekking — difficulty, scenery, crowds, climbing, access and costs.
The Dades Valley and Todra Gorge are south Morocco's two great canyons, usually visited together on a Marrakech-to-Sahara loop. They are only 30 km apart, but they have distinct characters — Todra has the most dramatic single gorge section, while Dades offers more variety with its rock formations and kasbah villages. This comparison helps you choose, or plan to do both.
Todra has the single most dramatic moment — the narrowest section where 300-metre walls close in on the river. Dades is more varied: a winding gorge, the surreal eroded "monkey fingers" pinnacles, and kasbah villages in terraced orchards. Todra for the wow factor; Dades for variety and culture.
Both are excellent for hiking. Dades offers the gorge walk, the monkey fingers scramble, and rim trails above the valley. Todra offers the easy gorge-floor walk, the moderate plateau climb for panoramic views, and palmery village trails. A combined 2-3 day Dades-Todra trek linking both through villages is the best option if you have the time.
Todra is the clear winner for climbing — the sheer quartzite walls are one of Morocco's premier climbing destinations, with multi-pitch routes popular in the cooler months. Dades is better for hiking than climbing. If climbing is your goal, head to Todra with a partner and local beta.
Both get day-trippers on Sahara loops, but both are quiet at dawn and by mid-morning if you stay overnight in the gorge. Staying in the gorge itself — rather than passing through — lets you walk before the crowds arrive. Strongly recommended for either gorge.
Both are east of Ouarzazate on the Sahara route, about 30 km apart. Dades is usually reached via the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs; Todra via Tinerhir. Most travellers visit both on a loop rather than choosing. A kasbah-route tour links them with Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate.
Guided day hikes in either gorge run $50-90 per person. A 2-3 day Dades-Todra trek runs $120-180 per person per day all-in. Guesthouses in the gorges run $40-80 per night including dinner and breakfast. Comparable costs — the question is whether to do one or both.
We run guided Dades and Todra gorge treks, and combined Dades-Todra routes, with licensed local guides. Book the Dades Valley gorge trek or the Todra Gorge hiking trek, or tell us you want both through our plan-my-trip form.
