Dades Valley vs Todra Gorge: Which South Morocco Destination Is Best?

Hassan Ait Baha · 9 min · Comparisons

Dades is kasbahs and winding gorges; Todra is sheer canyon walls. Here is how to choose — or see both.

The Dades Valley and Todra Gorge are the two great natural highlights of south Morocco, sitting just 30–40 km apart on the standard Sahara route from Marrakech. Most travellers see both in a single day, but if you are choosing where to linger, hike or stay overnight, this guide compares them.

The dramatic canyon walls of a south Morocco gorge

Todra Gorge

Todra is the more dramatic single sight: a narrow canyon with near-vertical 300-metre limestone walls, a river running through the base, and a short, memorable walk along the canyon floor. It is a quick stop — an hour or two is enough — but the sheer walls are genuinely awe-inspiring. Popular with rock climbers too.

Dades Valley

Dades is the more varied experience: a long valley of kasbahs, rose fields (in season), Berber villages and the famous Dades Gorge with its dramatic switchback road. It rewards more time — a morning hike through villages and kasbahs, a sunset over the gorge, and an overnight in a kasbah hotel. Dades is a place to slow down.

Hiking

Todra offers a short gorge walk — dramatic but brief. Dades offers longer valley trails through kasbahs, gorges and villages, and connects to multi-day trekking routes toward the Atlas. If hiking is your priority, Dades has more to offer over a full day.

Photography

Todra's sheer walls are the dramatic single shot. Dades offers the iconic switchback road, kasbahs against red rock, and sunrise over the gorge — arguably more photographic variety. For dawn photography, stay in Dades and shoot the switchbacks at first light.

Frequently asked questions

Are Dades Valley and Todra Gorge close to each other?

Yes — they are only about 30–40 km apart in the same region, and most Sahara tours from Marrakech visit both in a single day. You do not really have to choose; the standard route includes both. This guide helps if you have time for only one or want to know which to prioritise.

Which is more dramatic?

Todra Gorge is the more dramatic single sight — sheer 300-metre canyon walls rising almost vertically, with a river running through. Dades Valley is more varied — a winding gorge, kasbahs, rose fields and the famous switchback road. Todra for the wow moment; Dades for variety.

Which is better for hiking?

Both offer good walking. Todra has a short, dramatic gorge walk. Dades has longer valley and gorge trails through kasbahs and villages, and connects to multi-day trekking routes. For a longer hike, Dades; for a dramatic short walk, Todra.

Where should I stay overnight?

Both have good accommodation. Boumalne Dades has kasbah-style hotels and is well placed for sunrise in the Dades Gorge. Tinghir (near Todra) has hotels close to the gorge entrance. If you want to photograph the Dades switchbacks at dawn, stay in Dades.

Can I visit both on the way to Merzouga?

Yes — this is the standard Sahara route. Day 2 of the Merzouga tour typically visits Todra Gorge in the morning and continues to Merzouga, with a Dades Valley overnight on Day 1. You get both without choosing.
