How to visit the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge — Morocco's dramatic gorges, kasbahs, Berber villages and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.
The Dades Valley and Todra Gorge are the dramatic highlights of south-central Morocco — a land of sheer gorges, crumbling kasbahs, palm oases and Berber villages along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Both sit on the classic Marrakech-to-Sahara route and make a perfect overnight stop between the city and the dunes.
The Dades Valley runs east from Boumalne through a landscape of red-rock cliffs, palm groves and the surreal "monkey fingers" rock formations. The road twists up through switchbacks with spectacular views. Highlights include the old kasbah at Ait Youl, the valley village walks, and the sunrise light on the cliffs. It's a hiker's valley — dozens of routes lead through villages and up to viewpoints.
Todra Gorge is a 300-metre-deep cleft in the mountains, just 10 metres wide at its narrowest. A river runs through the base, lined with palm groves and small cafes. The gorge is a famous rock-climbing destination, but you don't need to climb to be awed — a walk through the narrow section takes 30 minutes and the scale is breathtaking. The wider valley above offers village walks and hiking.
The route from Ouarzazate through Skoura, the Dades Valley and on to Tinerhir is lined with ancient kasbahs and fortified villages — the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs". Highlights include the Skoura palmery and Kasbah Amerhidil, the Dades switchbacks, and the crumbling ksour along the river. It's one of the great scenic drives of Morocco.
Kasbah-hotels — restored mud-brick fortresses turned guesthouses — are the classic accommodation here, offering atmospheric rooms, good food and terrace views. Both the Dades Valley and Todra have a range from budget to boutique. Book ahead in spring and autumn.
Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking and photography. Summer is very hot. Winter is cold (nights near freezing) but quiet and the light is beautiful. The gorges are spectacular year-round.

Both lie in south-central Morocco between Ouarzazate and Merzouga, on the classic Marrakech-to-Sahara route. The Dades Valley runs east from Boumalne; Todra Gorge is near Tinerhir, about 90 minutes further east.
The dramatic narrow section of the gorge is about 600 metres long, with cliffs rising 300 metres on either side. The wider valley extends much further and offers hiking, climbing and village walks.
Yes — there are excellent day walks along the river, through Berber villages and up to viewpoints over the valley and the famous monkey-finger rock formations. A local guide helps with the less-marked routes.
