How to explore Morocco's Atlantic coast — Essaouira, Agadir, Taghazout and the beach towns, with surf, seafood, ramparts and year-round sun.
Morocco's Atlantic coast is a 1,800-km string of beaches, fortified ports, surf towns and sun-warmed resorts — a breezy counterpoint to the heat of the interior. From Essaouira's UNESCO medina in the north to the surf breaks of Taghazout and the resorts of Agadir in the south, the coast is Morocco's most relaxed face. It's also a year-round destination, thanks to the cooling ocean.
The coast's star. A fortified Portuguese-era medina, blue fishing boats, fresh seafood grills at the harbour, a wide windy beach and a thriving arts and Gnawa music scene. It's the perfect coastal day trip from Marrakech or a relaxed 2-night stay. See our Essaouira guide.
Taghazout and neighbouring Tamraght are Morocco's surf hubs — a laid-back cluster of villages with breaks for beginners to experts, surf camps and yoga. Anchor Point is a world-class right-hand point break. The surf season runs October to April. See our Taghazout surf week.
Agadir is Morocco's main beach resort — a wide bay, modern hotels, a marina and 300 days of sunshine a year. It's the easiest beach-and-sun base, with Taghazout just up the coast for surfing. Rebuilt after a 1960 earthquake, it's modern rather than historic, but the beach and climate are unbeatable.
Seafood is the headline. Essaouira's harbour grills are the classic experience — pick your fish, pay by weight, eat overlooking the boats. Oualidia is famous for its oysters. Tagine of fish, grilled sardines, fried calamari and fresh orange juice are everywhere.
Year-round. Summer for beach days, October-April for surfing, spring and autumn for sightseeing. Winter is mild, quiet and great value — the coast is a perfect winter-sun escape.

Essaouira for culture, seafood and a fortified medina; Taghazout for surfing; Agadir for beach resorts and sun; Mirleft and Sidi Ifni for rugged, quiet Atlantic beauty. Most travellers choose Essaouira as the highlight.
Yes — Morocco is a top surf destination. Taghazout and Tamraght are the surf capitals, with breaks for all levels. Essaouira is better for kitesurf and windsurf. The surf season runs roughly October to April.
The Atlantic is cool year-round (16-22°C) due to upwelling. It's refreshing in summer, bracing in winter. Beaches are beautiful for walking and sunbathing even if you don't swim.
Year-round. Summer is busiest and best for beach days. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing and surfing. Winter is mild, quiet and good value — the coast is a great escape from cold European winters.
