Chefchaouen & Northern Morocco: The Complete Travel Guide

Hassan Ait Baha · 15 min · Cultural Journeys

The blue-washed medina of Chefchaouen is one of Morocco's most iconic sights, but northern Morocco offers far more: Rif Mountain trekking, cedar forests, and Andalusian history.

Tucked into a fold of the Rif Mountains 60 km from the Mediterranean coast, Chefchaouen is one of the most visually arresting towns in the world. Its medina is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways painted in a hundred shades of blue — cobalt, turquoise, periwinkle, cerulean — and climbing the hillsides in a cascade of whitewashed and blue-washed walls that glow extraordinary blue-gold at dawn and dusk.

The Blue Medina

The medina of Chefchaouen covers a relatively small area — you can walk its full extent in 90 minutes — but every alley rewards slow exploration. The central Uta el-Hammam square is lined with cafes and anchored by a 15th-century kasbah (now a museum with a lovely garden). Side alleys lead to small craft shops selling the region's distinctive woven blankets, leather goods, and wood craft.

The medina is best experienced in the early morning before 9 am — the light is soft, the alleys are quiet, and the blue walls are at their most dreamlike. By mid-morning, group tours arrive in numbers. Spend the evening on the medina rooftops watching the last light fade over the Rif; the town is magical at dusk.

Hiking the Rif Mountains

The mountains immediately surrounding Chefchaouen offer excellent day hikes. The most popular is the 2-hour ascent to the Jebel el-Kalaa (Spanish mosque) viewpoint, which gives a classic panorama over the blue medina. More serious trekkers will enjoy the 2-day circuit via the Talassemtane National Park, which passes through Aleppo pine and cedar forest to reach a rififi (traditional Rif farmstead) for a homestay overnight.

Jebel Tissouka (2,122 m) is the highest accessible peak near Chefchaouen and rewards the 5-hour ascent with views over the Strait of Gibraltar on clear days. Our Rif Mountain trekking tours combine hiking with cultural visits to Rif Berber villages and are the best way to see the region beyond the town.

Cultural Experiences

Local Market (Souq)

The Monday and Thursday market outside the medina walls draws Rif mountain communities to Chefchaouen — Rif Berber men in traditional striped djellabas, women selling fresh produce, goats, and the unmistakeable atmosphere of a genuine local market rather than a tourist bazaar. Worth timing your visit around.

The Ras el-Ma Waterfall

A 30-minute walk from the medina, the Ras el-Ma ("Head of the Water") spring and waterfall is the source of the river that feeds Chefchaouen's historic water system. Local women still wash laundry here in the traditional manner. A quiet, authentic corner that most day-trippers miss.

Cooking & Craft

Chefchaouen has a strong craft tradition different from Marrakech — emphasis on Rif Berber woven textiles, goat-leather goods, and cedarwood carving. Half-day artisan visits can be arranged for small groups, and cooking classes focusing on Rif-region cuisine (bastilla, lamb with prunes, anise-flavoured sweets) are available.

How to Get There

From Marrakech: 4.5–5 hours by car (320 km). The most efficient route is via Rabat on the A1 motorway, turning north from Meknes toward the Rif. From Fes: 2.5 hours (200 km) — the most logical combination. From Tangier: 2 hours. CTM and Supratours buses connect Chefchaouen with all major Moroccan cities.

Best Seasons

Chefchaouen is beautiful year-round, but spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable. Spring brings green Rif hillsides and moderate temperatures. Autumn is warm and stable. Summer is popular but crowded and warm (28–32°C). Winter is mild and wet; the Rif receives significantly more rainfall than the south of Morocco.

Costs & Booking

Our 3-day Chefchaouen tours depart from Marrakech and include transport, accommodation in a traditional riad in the medina, all meals, licensed guide, Rif hiking day, and cultural experiences. From $380 per person in a group. Private tours and custom itineraries are available — contact us to tailor your northern Morocco experience.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

The exact origin of the blue is debated. The most widely accepted explanation is that Jewish refugees who settled in Chefchaouen in the 1490s (fleeing the Spanish Inquisition) painted buildings blue as a symbol of the sky and heaven in their faith. The practice spread through the community and became the town's visual identity. Today, residents repaint regularly to maintain the famous blue.

How long should I spend in Chefchaouen?

Two nights minimum, ideally three. The first day is for the medina and the iconic blue alleys; the second day for the Spanish mosque panorama, the local market, and the surrounding countryside. A third day allows an excursion into the Rif Mountains for hiking or a visit to a local waterfall.

Is Chefchaouen worth the long journey from Marrakech?

Yes, if you allocate enough time. The drive from Marrakech is 4.5–5 hours (320 km) and combining it with a stop in Fes or Meknes makes more geographic sense than a round-trip directly. On a 10+ day Morocco itinerary, Chefchaouen is a highlight that rewards the journey.

What else is there to see in northern Morocco beyond Chefchaouen?

The whole of northern Morocco is underexplored. Tetouan has a UNESCO medina rivalling Fes in preservation. The Mediterranean coast around Martil and Al Hoceima is beautiful and largely undiscovered by international tourists. The Rif cedar forests harbour endangered Barbary macaques and excellent hiking.
