The best time to trek in Morocco by season and range — when to climb Toubkal, trek Saghro, hike the gorges, and which months to avoid.
Morocco's trekking season is longer than most people assume — there is a good window somewhere in the country almost year-round. The key is matching the range to the season: the High Atlas in summer and autumn, the desert-mountain ranges in winter, and the gorges and Rif in spring and autumn. This guide breaks down the best time to trek in Morocco by season and by range, so you can plan around the conditions rather than against them.
One of the two best seasons. Snow recedes on Toubkal by late April, wildflowers fill the valleys, and days are warm with cool nights. The Rif is green and at its most beautiful. The gorges and Anti-Atlas are comfortable. April and May are peak months — book refuges early.
Too hot for the desert, lowlands and deep valleys, but excellent at high altitude. The High Atlas above 2,500 m is comfortable; Toubkal summits are fine if you start early. The Rif and the coast stay manageable. Avoid the Dades and Todra gorges and any low route in midsummer heat.
The other best season. Stable weather, clear summits, comfortable temperatures across nearly all ranges. September and October are peak months for Toubkal, the gorges, the Rif and the Anti-Atlas. Book well ahead — this is the busiest trekking window.
Snow and ice close Toubkal and Mgoun to all but mountaineers. But winter is prime time for Jebel Saghro, the Anti-Atlas and the lower gorges, which are mild and snow-free. The Rif can be rainy. For non-mountaineers, winter is the season to head south, not up.
Spring can bring afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains — start early. Summer heat is the main risk at low altitude; carry extra water and avoid midday walking. Autumn is the most stable. Winter snow on the high peaks can persist into May on sheltered slopes — check conditions with your guide before a spring summit.
Ramadan shifts each year and affects daily rhythm but does not prevent trekking. Your guide and cook will manage meals (eating during daylight is fine for non-Muslims on trek). Be respectful in villages. Check the dates if your trip falls during Ramadan — it is rarely a reason to change plans.
We run guided treks year-round, matching the range to the season. Book the Mount Toubkal 2-day trek for summer/autumn, or a Saghro or Anti-Atlas trek for winter, through our plan-my-trip form.
May, June and September are the best all-round months — snow-free on the high peaks, comfortable temperatures, and stable weather. April and October are also excellent. Avoid July-August for the desert and lowlands due to extreme heat.
Yes, but only with winter mountaineering skills — snow and ice cover the upper slopes from November to April, requiring crampons, an ice axe and a qualified winter guide. For non-mountaineers, summer (May-October) is the safe window.
October to April — Saghro is a winter trekking destination, with mild days and no snow when the High Atlas is snowbound. November to March is the peak window. Avoid summer, when the desert-edge heat is extreme.
Only at high altitude (above 2,500 m) and on the coast. The High Atlas above 2,500 m is fine in summer, but the valleys, desert and lowlands are too hot. Choose the Rif, the coast, or high Atlas routes for summer trekking.
July-August for anything below 2,500 m (extreme heat), and the high peaks in winter if you lack mountaineering skills. Ramadan can affect logistics but does not prevent trekking — check dates if your trip falls during it.
