Best Time to Climb Mount Toubkal: Seasonal Guide

Hassan Ait Baha · 8 min · Trekking

The season you choose matters enormously on Toubkal. Here is what to expect month by month, and when to book.

Spring climbing: April to June (recommended)

Spring is the sweet spot for most trekkers. Temperatures at the refuge are manageable (0–8°C overnight, 10–18°C during the day), snow has largely melted from the main route by late April, wildflowers carpet the lower valleys, and crowds are moderate rather than overwhelming. May is arguably the single best month — long days, stable weather, and comfortable temperatures.

Autumn climbing: September to November (recommended)

September and October offer similar conditions to spring with a slight edge: the summer visitor peak has passed, the landscape is golden and dry, and settled high-pressure weather systems make for stable trekking. November remains viable but colder; the first winter snowfall can arrive in late November and close upper sections.

Summer climbing: July to August

Summer is busy, hot below 2,000m, and the most crowded period on the mountain. The heat on lower sections makes early starts essential. Afternoon thunderstorms are more common in July. The summit itself remains cool, but the journey from Imlil to the refuge can be uncomfortably warm. The refuge fills, so pre-booking is essential.

Winter climbing: December to March

Winter Toubkal is a serious mountaineering objective. The standard route accumulates significant snow and ice, crampons and ice axes are not optional, and whiteout conditions can develop rapidly. For properly equipped and experienced climbers, a winter ascent is spectacular and far more peaceful than summer. For everyone else, wait for spring.

Booking recommendations

Book spring departures in January or February; autumn departures in July or August; summer in March or April. All of our Toubkal departures are guaranteed-departure groups with a maximum of 8 participants, and they fill steadily once the year's schedule is released. Our departures page shows live availability across all dates.

Frequently asked questions

Can you climb Toubkal in winter?

Yes, but winter ascents (December–March) require crampons, ice axe, and experience on snow and ice. They should not be attempted without specialist mountaineering equipment and an experienced winter guide.

Is Toubkal open year-round?

The routes are always open, but conditions vary dramatically. Summer (July–August) is busy and hot on lower sections; winter requires technical equipment; spring and autumn are the sweet spots for most trekkers.

How far ahead should I book my Toubkal trek?

For spring departures (April–May), book 2–3 months ahead. For autumn (September–October), 1–2 months is usually sufficient. Christmas and New Year week fills the refuge early so book 3–4 months in advance for those dates.

What are the busiest months on Toubkal?

July and August see the highest visitor numbers, particularly from European school-holiday travellers. April, May and October are busy but not congested. The refuge can feel full in peak summer; a 3-day route gives more flexibility.
