The Best Mosques in Morocco: Islamic Architecture & Cultural Sites

Omar Benali · 8 min · Long-Tail

From the sea-built Hassan II Mosque to the Koutoubia minaret, here are Morocco's finest mosques.

Morocco's mosques are among its finest architectural achievements — square minarets, intricate tilework and a craft tradition that influenced Islamic architecture across the western Mediterranean. This guide covers the best mosques, what makes them special, and how to visit respectfully.

A great Moroccan mosque beside the water

Hassan II Mosque (Casablanca)

The most spectacular mosque in Morocco and one of the largest in the world, the Hassan II Mosque sits partly over the Atlantic, with a retractable roof, a 210-metre minaret and stunning craftsmanship. It is the one major Moroccan mosque open to non-Muslims, via guided tours outside prayer times. A highlight of any Casablanca visit.

Koutoubia Mosque (Marrakech)

The Koutoubia minaret is Marrakech's landmark — a 12th-century Almohad tower whose proportions became the template for Moroccan and Andalusian minarets, including the Giralda in Seville. The mosque itself is closed to non-Muslims, but the minaret and gardens are beautiful from outside, especially lit up at night.

Hassan Tower (Rabat)

The Hassan Tower is the unfinished 12th-century minaret of a vast Almohad mosque, standing beside the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Together they are Rabat's most monumental sight and a striking example of Almohad ambition. The site is open to visitors and a key stop in the capital.

Tin Mal Mosque (High Atlas)

The 12th-century Tin Mal Mosque, in the High Atlas south of Marrakech, is a rare example of a historic Moroccan mosque sometimes open to non-Muslim visitors. It is a beautifully simple Almohad structure and a worthwhile detour for architecture lovers on a southern loop.

Moroccan Mosque Architecture

Moroccan mosque architecture is known for square Almohad minarets, intricate zellige mosaic tilework, carved cedar wood and plaster, horseshoe arches, and a sense of harmonious proportion. The craft traditions seen in the great mosques — zellige, gebs plaster, cedar carving — appear across Moroccan madrasas and palaces too.

Visiting Etiquette

Most mosques are closed to non-Muslims — admire from outside. For the Hassan II Mosque, book a guided tour, dress modestly, remove shoes, and stay with the guide. Always be quiet and respectful near prayer times. Photography is usually permitted in the tour areas of Hassan II.

Frequently asked questions

Can non-Muslims visit mosques in Morocco?

Most mosques in Morocco are closed to non-Muslims, with one major exception: the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, which offers guided tours to non-Muslims outside prayer times. The Tin Mal Mosque in the High Atlas is also sometimes visitable. Otherwise, admire the architecture from the outside.

Which is the most impressive mosque in Morocco?

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is the most spectacular — one of the largest mosques in the world, partly built over the Atlantic, with a retractable roof and stunning craftsmanship. The Koutoubia in Marrakech and the Hassan Tower in Rabat are the most historic and iconic minarets.

What is Moroccan Islamic architecture known for?

Moroccan mosque architecture is known for its square minarets (the Almohad style), intricate zellige tilework, carved cedar and plaster, horseshoe arches, and harmonious proportions. The minaret of the Koutoubia is the template for much of Moroccan and Andalusian mosque architecture.

What is the etiquette for visiting the Hassan II Mosque?

Book a guided tour in advance, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered, women may be asked to cover hair), remove shoes before entering the prayer hall, and stay with the guide. Tours run outside prayer times. Photography is usually permitted in the tour areas.

Can I see the Koutoubia minaret inside?

No — the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech is an active mosque closed to non-Muslims. However, the minaret and the surrounding gardens are a beautiful sight from the outside, especially lit up at night, and the square in front is a landmark gathering point.
