The Best Hammams in Morocco: Traditional Baths & Wellness

A hammam is Morocco's great wellness ritual. Here is how to choose and enjoy the best.

A hammam is Morocco's great wellness ritual — a steam, scrub and rinse that leaves you uniquely clean and relaxed. Every Moroccan city has them, from simple public bathhouses to luxurious spa hammams in riads. This guide covers the best hammams, what to expect, and how to enjoy them.

A traditional Moroccan spa hammam setting

Traditional vs Spa Hammams

A traditional hammam is a public bathhouse — cheap, communal and authentic, where locals go weekly. The ritual is a steam, a black-soap scrub with a kessa glove, and a rinse. A spa hammam (in a riad or hotel) is private, with trained therapists, a calm setting, and added treatments like argan-oil massage and clay wraps. Most visitors prefer the spa version for comfort; the traditional version is the real local experience.

The Hammam Ritual

You start in a warm steam room to open the pores, then a therapist (or yourself, in a public hammam) applies black soap (savon beldi) and scrubs with a kessa glove, removing dead skin. This is followed by a rinse, often a hair wash, and in spa versions a massage or oil wrap. You emerge remarkably smooth and relaxed. Allow 45–90 minutes.

Where to Find the Best Hammams

Etiquette

In a spa hammam, everything is provided and the therapist guides you. In a traditional public hammam, bring your own towel and soap, follow the locals' lead, and expect a communal, no-frills setting. Modesty is respected — swimwear or disposable underwear is standard. Tipping the therapist in a spa is appreciated.

Cost

A traditional public hammam costs a few dollars. A spa hammam runs roughly $30–70 for a scrub and rinse, and $80–150+ with massage and full treatments. Luxury hotel hammams charge more. We book the right level for our travellers' preferences.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Moroccan hammam?

A hammam is a traditional public bathhouse where Moroccans go to cleanse, socialise and relax. The ritual involves a steam room, a full-body scrub with black soap (savon beldi), a kessa glove exfoliation, and a rinse. Luxury riads and spas offer private spa-style hammam versions with massage and treatments.

What is the difference between a traditional and a spa hammam?

A traditional hammam is a public bathhouse — cheap, authentic and communal, used by locals. A spa hammam (in a riad or hotel) is private, with trained therapists, a calmer atmosphere, and added treatments like massage and argan-oil wraps. Tourists usually prefer the spa version for comfort; the traditional version is the authentic local experience.

How much does a hammam cost?

A traditional public hammam costs a few dollars. A spa hammam in a good riad runs roughly $30–70 for a scrub and rinse, and $80–150+ with massage and full treatments. Luxury hotel hammams charge more. We can book the right level for you.

What should I bring to a hammam?

For a spa hammam, everything is provided — you just need swimwear (or disposable underwear, depending on the spa) and a change of clothes. For a traditional public hammam, bring a towel, swimwear, soap and shampoo, and a change of clothes. The spa version is far simpler for visitors.

Is a hammam suitable for men and women?

Yes. Traditional public hammams have separate sessions or areas for men and women. Spa hammams in riads and hotels are private and bookable by anyone, with same-sex therapists as standard. It is a normal, respected wellness ritual for all.
