From luxury ensuite tents to authentic Berber camps, here are Morocco's best desert camps.
A night in a desert camp is the centrepiece of most Morocco trips, and the camp you choose shapes the experience. This guide covers the best desert camps in Morocco — where they are, what luxury and budget options offer, and how to choose.
Merzouga has Morocco's best desert camps, set in or at the foot of the towering Erg Chebbi dunes. The range runs from simple Berber camps with shared facilities to luxury camps with private ensuite tents, hot showers and multi-course dinners. This is the place for the iconic dune-setting camp and the widest choice.
Zagora's camps are simpler and quieter, in smaller dune fields closer to Marrakech. They suit travellers with only two days or those who prefer a less-visited desert. The experience — camel trek, dinner, stars — is the same; the dunes are smaller and the camps more modest.
Agafay, 45 minutes from Marrakech, has luxury glamping camps with ensuite tents, pools (at some) and full service — but no sand dunes. It is the best choice for a one-night desert treat without the 9-hour drive to Merzouga. The setting is a rocky plateau with Atlas views, dramatic at sunset.
Luxury camps offer private ensuite tents, real beds, hot showers and served dinners — approaching hotel comfort in the desert. Budget camps offer traditional Berber tents, shared bathrooms and communal meals — authentic and comfortable enough for most. Both include the camel trek, dinner, music and the starry sky. The camp changes the comfort, not the desert.
Our 3-Day Sahara Tour to Merzouga offers both camp levels. Our Agafay Desert Glamping Experience is the near-Marrakech luxury option. Our Luxury Marrakech & Desert 5-Day Escape includes a luxury camp. Tell us your trip length and occasion via the plan-my-trip form and we will match you to the right camp.
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has the most dramatic dune-setting camps and the widest range from budget to luxury. Zagora offers quieter, simpler camps closer to Marrakech. Agafay, near Marrakech, has luxury glamping camps without the long drive. For dunes, Merzouga; for convenience, Agafay.
A luxury camp offers large private tents with real beds, proper linens, private ensuite bathrooms with hot showers, a multi-course served dinner, and sometimes a pool or lounge tent — all inside or at the foot of the dunes. It approaches a good hotel in comfort while keeping the desert setting.
A budget (standard) camp offers traditional Berber-style tents with simple bedding, shared bathroom facilities, and a communal tagine dinner and breakfast. It is clean, safe and authentic, with the same camel trek and starry sky as a luxury camp — just simpler comfort.
A standard camp is included in most Merzouga tours (from ~$495 for 3 days). A luxury camp upgrade adds roughly $80–150 per person per night. Agafay luxury glamping starts higher per night but saves the long drive. We offer both at every desert destination.
October to April — warm days and cool but bearable nights, with the clearest skies. Avoid July and August when desert daytime heat is extreme. Winter nights are cold but the camps are heated and the stargazing is spectacular. Book early for spring.
