Azzaden Valley Trekking Guide: Remote Trek & Berber Culture

Hassan Ait Baha · 13 min · Trekking

The Azzaden Valley is the quiet side of Toubkal — a remote multi-day trek through Berber villages, high passes and gorges, with guides and costs.

The Azzaden Valley is the quiet side of the Toubkal massif — a wild, beautiful valley to the west of the standard Imlil route, crossed by a network of mule paths linking Berber villages and two high passes. Trekking here delivers the dramatic scenery and culture of the High Atlas with a fraction of the crowds you find on the direct Toubkal ascent. For trekkers who want solitude, acclimatisation and a genuine traverse, it is the best route in the range. This guide covers the route, difficulty, and logistics.

The remote Azzaden Valley on the quiet side of the Toubkal massif

The Route

A typical Azzaden traverse starts from Imlil, climbs over the Tizi Mzik pass (2,489 m) and descends into the Azzaden Valley to the Lepiney Refuge. From there you cross the Tizi Ouanoums pass at 3,684 m — the high point — and descend to the Toubkal Refuge, with an optional Mount Toubkal summit before the final descent to Imlil. The full traverse runs 3-5 days depending on pace and whether you include the summit.

Why Trek Azzaden?

Difficulty

Moderate-to-strenuous. The Tizi Ouanoums pass at 3,684 m is the crux — a long climb followed by a descent to the Toubkal Refuge. Days run 6-7 hours with full packs on the mule. No technical climbing in summer, but you need solid endurance, sure footing on loose ground, and comfort with remote conditions. If you add the Toubkal summit, expect a pre-dawn start and a 4,167 m peak.

Accommodation

You sleep in mountain refuges (the Lepiney Refuge in Azzaden, the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m) and Berber gite homestays in villages along the way. Refuges offer dorm beds and meals; gites are simpler village houses with basic rooms and home-cooked food. Your guide books everything and arranges a cook where needed.

Guides & Costs

A licensed guide with a mule is essential. A 3-5 day Azzaden traverse runs $120-200 per person per day all-in, including the guide, mule and muleteer, refuge and gite accommodation, and all meals. It costs more than the 2-day Toubkal route but delivers a far richer, quieter experience.

Best Time

May to October for snow-free conditions. April-May and September-November are ideal — wildflowers in spring, stable weather in autumn. Winter brings snow to the high passes, turning the route into a mountaineering proposition requiring crampons, ice axe and experience.
