The Atlas rewards year-round exploration, but choosing the right season transforms the experience. Here is what each period offers.
March through June is the finest window for Atlas trekking. The valleys are at their greenest, wildflowers carpet the higher meadows in April and May, and temperatures are ideal — warm enough to be comfortable, cool enough to hike without distress. Snow has largely retreated from routes below 3,500m by late April.
Summer is viable at altitude but requires early starts. The valleys below 1,500m are hot (28–35°C) but the high trails above 2,000m remain comfortable. July and August are the busiest months on popular trails. The compensation is the longest days: 14 hours of daylight gives flexibility that other seasons cannot match.
Autumn matches spring in quality and slightly exceeds it for solitude. September and October are warm, dry and golden. The harvest season fills village markets with fresh walnuts, almonds and apples — trekking through working orchards in October is one of Morocco's most underrated experiences.
The lower valleys below 2,000m remain accessible and scenic through winter with appropriate clothing. Above 3,000m, proper winter equipment is essential. The Atlas in snow is genuinely beautiful, but limited daylight, cold overnight temperatures and icy sections make lower-altitude winter routes the sensible choice for most visitors.
Yes. Summer is excellent at altitude above 2,000m, but the approach from Marrakech (at 460m) is very hot. Start early and plan to be above 1,500m by mid-morning during July and August.
Lower valley hikes remain accessible through winter. Routes above 3,000m require winter equipment from December through March. Imlil itself is reachable year-round.
April and May see an extraordinary wildflower bloom in the lower valleys and on the higher meadows. This is one of the best and least-discussed reasons to trek the Atlas in spring.
