Atlas Mountains 3-Day Trek Itinerary: Toubkal & Berber Villages

Hassan Ait Baha · 13 min · Trekking

Three days in the High Atlas is the perfect Toubkal summit trek with acclimatisation and village overnights.

A three-day trek in the High Atlas is the ideal way to climb Mount Toubkal properly. The extra day over the popular 2-day version gives you acclimatisation, a gentler pace, and a real sense of the mountain landscape and its Berber villages — not just a dash to the summit and back. This is the itinerary we recommend to most fit hikers.

Day 1 — Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge

Start from Imlil (1,740m), the gateway village 90 minutes south of Marrakech. Trek uphill through walnut groves and Berber villages to the Sidi Chamharouch shrine, a pilgrimage site by a mountain stream. Continue to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) in roughly 5–6 hours. Settle in, eat early, and rest before the summit push.

Day 2 — Acclimatisation Hike

A crucial day. Rather than resting idle, take a guided acclimatisation hike up a nearby peak such as Tizi Oussem or the western slopes toward the Tizi n'Tichka col, reaching around 3,600–3,800m. This helps your body adjust to the altitude and dramatically improves summit-day comfort and success. Return to the refuge for a second night.

Day 3 — Summit Push & Descent

A pre-dawn start for the summit of Toubkal (4,167m), reached in roughly 4–5 hours from the refuge via the south cwm and the final scree slope. On a clear day the views stretch to the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. After summit photos, descend all the way back to Imlil in roughly 4–5 hours, arriving by late afternoon. Transfer back to Marrakech.

Fitness & Experience

You should be comfortable hiking 5–7 hours a day with sustained ascent at altitude. No mountaineering experience is needed in the snow-free season (April–October). From November to March, snow and ice on the summit ridge require crampons, an ice axe and winter mountaineering experience — book the winter version only if you have that background.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is a 3-day Atlas Mountains trek?

A 3-day Toubkal trek is moderate to challenging. You need solid hiking fitness — comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day with sustained ascent — but no mountaineering experience in the snow-free season (April–October). The 3-day format adds an acclimatisation day that makes the summit much more comfortable than the 2-day version.

What is the best 3-day Atlas trek route?

The classic 3-day Toubkal summit trek: Day 1 Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge via the Sidi Chamharouch shrine, Day 2 acclimatisation hike to a nearby peak or valley, Day 3 pre-dawn summit push and full descent to Imlil. It balances summit success with acclimatisation.

Do I need a guide for an Atlas Mountains trek?

Yes. A licensed mountain guide is required for Toubkal and strongly recommended for all Atlas trekking. The terrain is remote, weather can change fast, and local guides support the Imlil mountain economy. We provide certified guides for all our treks.

What should I pack for a 3-day Atlas trek?

Sturdy broken-in hiking boots, layered clothing (warm layers for the summit, which can be near-freezing at dawn), a daypack, sunscreen, a headtorch, a sleeping bag liner for the refuge, water purification or large water bottles, and trekking poles for the descent.

How much does a 3-day Atlas trek cost?

Our 3-day Toubkal summit trek is $443 per person, including a certified mountain guide, refuge/guesthouse accommodation, all meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 3 lunch, mule portage for group equipment, and park entry fees. Excluded: travel insurance (required), personal gear, and guide tips.
