The Anti-Atlas is Morocco's remote desert-mountain range — quiet treks through Berber villages, volcanic plateaus and dramatic gorges, with guides and costs.
The Anti-Atlas is Morocco's secret trekking range — a desert-mountain landscape of granite peaks, almond and argan groves, and Berber villages, south of the High Atlas and far from the Toubkal crowds. It is lower and drier than the High Atlas, which makes it a superb winter destination when the higher peaks are snowbound, and its remoteness means you will often have entire valleys to yourself. For trekkers who have already done Toubkal and want something quieter and more culturally immersive, the Anti-Atlas is the next step. This guide covers the routes, the culture, and the logistics.
The Anti-Atlas is a landscape of pink granite mountains, deep gorges, and terraced villages surrounded by argan and almond trees. It is drier and warmer than the High Atlas, with a desert-edge character — rocky plateaus, palm oases, and dramatic rock formations like the famous painted rocks near Tafraoute. The trekking is desert-mountain rather than alpine: long, scenic days without extreme altitude.
The main trekking base, surrounded by granite peaks and Berber villages in the Ameln Valley. Day hikes and 2-4 day treks link villages through almond groves and over low passes, with the famous painted rocks and the Gorges d'Ait Mansour within reach.
A gentler gateway to the Anti-Atlas, with treks linking the old walled town to surrounding villages and argan cooperatives. Often combined with Tafraoute on a 3-5 day loop.
Moderate. The altitude is lower than the High Atlas (peaks around 2,000-2,500 m), so altitude sickness is rarely an issue, but the days are long and the terrain rocky and exposed. You need moderate endurance and sure footing. The main challenge is heat outside the cooler months — stick to November-March for the best conditions.
Berber gite homestays in villages along the routes, with basic rooms and home-cooked meals, and small guesthouses in Tafraoute and Taroudant. The homestays are simple but the hospitality is genuine — a highlight of trekking here. Your guide arranges everything.
A licensed guide is essential for the remote terrain. A multi-day Anti-Atlas trek runs $120-180 per person per day all-in, including the guide, mule or vehicle support, gite accommodation and meals. It is comparable in cost to High Atlas trekking but far quieter.
November to March is ideal — mild daytime temperatures, cool nights, no snow. Spring (April) is also good before the heat builds. Avoid summer, when daytime temperatures are extreme. This is the best winter trekking destination in Morocco.
We run guided Anti-Atlas treks from Tafraoute and Taroudant with licensed local guides. Book the Tafraoute argan and Berber culture tour, or tell us your dates for a custom multi-day traverse through our plan-my-trip form.
South of the High Atlas, running toward the Atlantic around Tafraoute and Taroudant. They are lower than the High Atlas (peaks around 2,000-2,500 m) but more remote and desert-like, with a drier, warmer climate.
Remote, quiet and scenic — granite peaks, argan and almond groves, Berber villages and dramatic gorges, with very few other trekkers. It is desert-mountain hiking rather than alpine, best in the cooler months when the High Atlas is snowbound.
Yes — it is one of the best winter trekking destinations in Morocco, with mild daytime temperatures and no snow. While Toubkal requires crampons in winter, the Anti-Atlas offers comfortable multi-day trekking from November to March.
Yes — the area is remote, paths are unmarked, and water sources and accommodation need local knowledge. A licensed guide is essential for any multi-day trek here. The upside is genuine solitude and cultural immersion.
Via Agadir or Taroudant (the usual gateways), or from Marrakech on a longer loop. Tafraoute is the main trekking base. Most trekkers combine it with a Sahara or Atlantic coast itinerary rather than visiting it standalone.
