Ten days is the sweet spot for experiencing Morocco's three iconic landscapes: mountain, desert, and city. Here is how to structure it.
Days 1–3: Mount Toubkal trekking (Imlil base). Days 4–6: Marrakech city and Agafay Desert. Days 7–9: Sahara Desert loop via Dades Valley and Merzouga. Day 10: Return to Marrakech and departure.
Day 1: Arrive Marrakech, transfer to Imlil (1.5 hours), acclimatisation afternoon walk, overnight in Imlil. Day 2: Trek to Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) — 5–6 hours, overnight at the refuge. Day 3: Pre-dawn summit push to 4,167m, full descent to Imlil, transfer back to Marrakech. This is the most physically demanding segment — get it done first while you are fresh.
Day 4: Rest and recovery day in Marrakech. Medina exploration at your own pace — gardens, souks, a hammam, and Jemaa el-Fnaa in the evening. Day 5: Full-day guided Marrakech experience (cooking class or food tour by night). Day 6: Afternoon Agafay Desert sunset camel ride and Berber dinner — a taste of desert atmosphere within 45 minutes of Marrakech.
Day 7: Drive south over Tizi n'Tichka pass, visit Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO), continue to Dades Valley. Day 8: Todra Gorge, then south to Merzouga for a sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi and a night in the desert camp. Day 9: Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at camp, drive back toward Marrakech via the Draa Valley (arriving evening).
A final morning in Marrakech — last medina walk, souvenir shopping, or a rooftop breakfast before your transfer to the airport. Marrakech Menara Airport is 20 minutes from the city centre; allow at least 2 hours before departure.
The most efficient approach is a private driver-guide for the full 10 days: they know the routes, handle all logistics, and provide cultural context throughout. Alternatively, the Toubkal trek is done with a mountain guide; the Sahara loop is a separate private tour; Marrakech city experiences are booked independently. The combined approach costs more but removes all logistical friction.
Toubkal first is recommended — you arrive fresh for the physical challenge, and the Sahara and Marrakech provide increasingly relaxing days to finish. The alternative (Marrakech → Sahara → Toubkal) leaves the hardest physical activity for last.
Budget travellers: $600–900 per person (hostels, shared tours, local transport). Mid-range: $1,200–1,800 per person (3-star hotels, private tours, guided treks). Luxury: $2,500–4,000+ per person (boutique riads, luxury desert camp, private guide throughout).
April–May and September–October are ideal — both Toubkal and the Sahara are in their best conditions simultaneously. Avoid July–August (Sahara heat) and December–March (Toubkal winter conditions) for this itinerary.
